Ive recently added a new Head Unit, but given the size and location of the speakers theres very little bass response. Whilst Im not looking to blow the windows out, having a little bass would be good. Any recomendations? I like the look of Ade's installation, but given Im not very good with electrics and want to keep things simple, I fancy getting one of those Active Subs (like Fli /Vibe/Infinity) for around £100. Any advice? am I actually going to hear/feel it given the fule tank is between the boot and the passenger compartment?

Cheers
Simon

To get the best results you need to filter the bass out of the front speakers. This lets them play louder with less distortion

Many head units allow you to high-pass filter the front speakers and use the rear speaker preamp out or a dedicated subwoofer output to feed the sub amp. I'd try a 120 Hz high-pass on the front and an 80 Hz low-pass on the woofer and start with all EQ and the loudness / X-Bass / etc off. I'd also use an amp for the front speakers if possible

There are quite a few amps around that have all the filters & amplifier channels you need so you could use one amp and a passive woofer

Yes, it is more than enough bass for me, agree with above post however, you should filter out low frequencies from other speakers either by using an amp /headunit or by some careful use of capacitors on each speaker to stop them distorting from the low frequencies at high volumes.

The Basslink 2 has an option for a second slide in amp to run your 4 channel setup too. Fitment is relatively simple, the hardest part for me was running a nice fat cable from the boot to the battery in the front.

A nice touch with the affinity setup is the remote sub volume control unit.

Thanks! I think my Kenwood has the ability to high.low pass. Cheers.

try

www.steelmate.co.uk they make a range of active sub woofers with high and low input capability they have an old w203 coupe with a couple in and they are loud.

i also have one and will be selling it shortly, it sounds great but i want more bass , car audio is addictive

Thats the thing, my original reasoning is that Ive never had a sub so anything will be a improvement, but at the same time, as you say once its in Ill maybe want more!.

I had a Clarion SRV-202 active sub in the boot of my E320 coupe. It fitted in nicely into the boot, underneath the aerial secured with a bungy cord. You will have no problem hearing it!

IMO a active sub in the boot of a w124 will give you a poor response. It will not make up for the lack in mid-bass. The 12cm speakers in the dash are a great size for mids, but offer no mid bass. For this reason I had door pods made up, to house 6.5" mid bass drivers. Im running a focal utopia 3way front end, Ive got tweeters on the top of the doors, 4" mid ranges in the dash and 6.5" mid-bass in the doors.

Because the setup on the front can give a lower response, the slightly delayed and muffled sub from the boot becomes less of an issue. Needless to say due to the design, you need a lot more power to the sub than a hatchback. Ive got 1000w on tap from a JL 1000/1, a little excessive but leaves plenty of dynamic headroom.

With the petrol tank behing the seats and a thick metal shelf, you will only get SUB bass from the boot.

It really depends on what your happy with as a end result and what the budget is.

I have an Alpine active sub for sale, PM me if you are interested.

I might have missed the boat on this one, I have a clear coloured Infinity Basslink for sale if anyone is interested. I used to have it installed in my old car and it was more than enough bass for me.

PM if you're interested, its going cheap!

Can't PM you as you need to have 30 posts to PM ,

How much do you want for it , and where are you based ?
