I was wondering if anybody can help me with an irritating problem.

I have had the steering wheel changed and now the bloody airbag light won't turn off. any way i can do a bypass on it so it will turn off.

any help will be very appreciated.

thanks

If the ignition is turned on when the airbag is disconnected then the warning light will come on and will require the workshop to turn it off IIRC.

any idea how much this might cost?

can anyone confirm if the airbag will still work even if the light is on? if so and you are going to keep the car, why not just pull the bulb out if you dont want to get it reset by MB? you know the airbag is fine....

just an idea, i probably would get it reset tho!

Hi,
I had the same problem with S500. If you tamper with the seat belt pretensioners or airbag and/or wiring it causes an SRS error.
You will have to have it reset by stealers it cost me £50.00!
SRS system will not work at all if the light is on so pulling bulb is not the answer.

Get it reset ... any dealer with even a small amount of conscience (this may be easier to find, than to suggest !) shouldn't rip you off for more than 30 mins labour ... I'm sure the process doesn't take more than a few seconds with the correct tool / Star diagnostics.

Were the keys left in while you swapped the steering wheel ? If not, then no reason why the light should be showing, unless the airbag is faulty ... so might be worth making sure firstly that it has been connected correctly before forking out money at the dealers to reset the light.

for what it's worth - I had the airbag light on when my c230k was a few months old. Turned out to be a faulty contact - theres a spiral shaped piece of metal that keeps the electical contacts whilst the wheel is turned.
Given the nature of MB systems - perhaps your new wheel has electical parameters that do not satisfy the test circuit - I have read on this forum about people who go with non standard bulbs and the blown bulb indicator comes on - even though the bulb is working.
just a thought - going back to my cave now...

Regarding the airbag light, if it stays on it indicates a stored fault in the SRS system; if it then goes out after 2 minutes it indicates a non-critical fault and the SRS system will still function, but if the light continues on after 2 mins the SRS system is compromised and should be attended to urgently.
