Aircon stopped working!

I had a problem with my W140 on one of the very hot days recently!!

The aircon stopped working (blowing hot air) - when I got out, I could hear the gas comming out, at what appeared to be towards the front of the car (condenser area).

I know the eveporator (behind the dash) sometimes goes on these motors, but I'm wondering if that was the case, would I have heard the gas escaping towards the front??

Thanks!!

Hi, Your best bet would be to take the car to a air con place and ask them to do a vacume test on the air con system. If the vacume pressure drops on the guage then you have a leak.
To identify the leak the air con man will need to put some dye into the system and then check with the ultra violet light for a leak.

sounds like a damaged condensor..........:(

common on these, stones and grit fly up through the grill and damage the condensor.......again, worth getting dye put in and checking...

How you doing Frog? Haven't heard off you for a while.

Yeah a damaged condensor. It sits at the front of the car immediately behind the twin rear facing fans.

The evapourator sits behind the dash, as you said, at the base of the windscreen.

It was the condensor that went on mine last year, I called AirMedic who had a local guy come round. Condensor cost me £130, regas £50. Took him about 2 hours so all in all it came to £240.

You have to have working aircon in these double glazed monsters. if my evapourator ever gives up I'll sell the car and buy one with working aircon, it's a huge job to change them on a 140.

if you can hear a hiss there's not much point in dye testing - just play the "find a big hole in the condenser" game.

I've recently changed mine and along with the drier unit parts cost was just under £200 plus £40 to get the rebuilt system tested and regassed

Thanks for the replies chaps!!! Work's been crazy so I havent been on much!! :(

So it sounds like the favourite is the condenser. If it was the evaporator, would I have heard the hissing from the front?? Or would the gas have been comming out behind the dashboard?!

I'll get it investigated, but just wondering what to expect here...!!!

Thanks again!!!
