Aldi Desktop PC offer - £350

For the PC deals, usually all stores have them from opening time - quantities vary.

Some people have posted that they were able to buy the evening before by asking the Manager....

Also wondering if that is 64-bit windows or not.
It's 32 bit.
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 32 Bit
Sets new standards when it comes to user-friendliness, performance, reliability and security. In addition, the successor to Vista opens up new multimedia opportunities.

(OEM version, 64-bit recovery DVD included with the product)

32 bit unfortunately.

The real question is whether the chipset and CPU supports 64 bit. If it does then I'm sure you can access a select 64 bit version from somewhere ;)

???

While it's really appealing, noteably with the hot swap SATA bays, it's does not appear to be a massive saving. A good buy I am sure if you are looking to buy, but the savings dont seem to be there to justify an impulse buy.

So need to decide if I want a new toy or not...

Also do all Aldi typically stores get some of this special offer stock or only some? Those that do have the stock, do they have it from open doors or can it be later in the day?

thanks!

Just spoke to the manger at my local Aldi. They will have 6 on offer and it's first come first served from 09:00 tomorrow

Just apply some female logic - it's a bargain, so you must buy it.

Yeah that has me confused.

Might have to trundle down there in the morning and see if they have them. Must be a sign if they do!

Well if you buy Win7, you get a single serial number and copies of both the 32 and 64 bit DVDs.

Maybe Aldi have preinstalled 32-bit (so their "less savvy" customers don't suffer incompatibilities) and bundled the 64-bit version as an option?

Sounds feasible to me.

I am still torn. The processor is ok, the hdd capacity good and the sata bays appealing. The total supported ram, graphics adapter and other bits and pieces not so good.

Well, the 4GB RAM is more than the installed 32 bit OS can use anyway!

Graphics will be fine for normal use - poor for gaming though!

Have you seen some motherboard info for this machine that lists the max supported RAM then?

not sure actually - I read it elsewhere but the forum kepts mixing the model we are discussing up with another one so not sure at all.

I think the short of it is it's a good value and spec home PC, just not a high end gaming PC.

Oh and I've nothing against Dell!

For the last 3 years Aldi have sold 2 desktops in the first Quarter - a cheapo first and then a higher spec "multimedia" one - there is speculation of an i5 machine Feb/March on the forums.

I would self-build for gaming so you can get unlocked motherboard BIOS to allow access to overclocking (CPU and graphics), choose your own (higher rated but still quiet) power supply and arrange your own (more powerful but still quiet) cooling.

Then pick the right bits....its often surprising which games can "eat" multi-core CPU and which need GPU power!

Yes you'll need to be one of the 1st few through the door on the offer day.

There are regular posts looking for good value PCs, so I hope this is of interest to some.
