Alloy wheel refurbishment - recommendations?

I used Spit N Polish via Whitehorse Tyres in Thornton heath / Croydon to do my 17in AMGs type 2.

They did a very good job for about £45 per wheel.

hi all need to have the 19 inch sport wheels on my E65 done, have been quoted £100 for 3 via a mobile outift, £60 per wheel by wicked wheel (plus vat) and £25 per wheel by the bmw approved body shop!!!

What tools, sprays are required to do refurbishent DIY ?

Any chance of some details of these guys as I am near Oxford and have four (!) sets of alloys needing refurb? ... the price sounds good!

To good :(

As my old sergeant used to say, "You get what you pay for!"

I'm sure the mobile man might make a visually nice looking job, thanks, but no thanks. The wheels will have to come off, the tyres removed and I would like the wheels cleaned in the best way possible, be that sand-blasting or whatever.

We all have differing standards and I fully accept there is a market for this type of 'tittivation' :o but is it a long term refurbishment?

I wish it was true that you always got what you pay for, but my experience of 21st century "Rip Off Britain" tells me that if it was ever true, it isn't any more. Sometimes you are lucky, and you do get value for money, but in most cases, companies are just trying to rip you off for as much money as possible while offering as little as they can get away with in return.

Alloy wheel refurbishment is a case in point, as even the more expensive specialists can get it wrong, as we have seen on this forum and elsewhere.

I have four sets of wheels to refurbish. They need a good clean, and just a little work to remove some very minor corrosion and kerb marks, then strip, prime and paint. They simply aren't worth spending £60 + VAT per wheel on, which would come to over £1000.

My budget is £25 per wheel, toital £400. If I cannot get a good job done for £25 I will sell them unrefurbished and let someone else spend their money on them. If I cannot be sure of a good job at any price, why do it at all?

I am grateful for this thread as I also have two sets of genuine Mercedes wheels in excellent condition, with only tiny marks, which I have now decided to sell just as they are.

To a degree I go along with what your saying but with a reputable company you can at least complain and if there is a just reason then there is a probability the fault will be rectified. What kind of refurbishment will anyone get if the wheel is left on the car?

When my son had his done the shop fitted four decent wheels with very good tyres onto his car whilst the wheels were refurbished.

As I said earlier, each to there own and I personally would consider replacing the wheels, but on the wider, split rims this option might prove to be very expensive and rule it out?

John,

Please let me begin by stating that I have the very greatest of respect for your opinions.

My £25 per wheel budget will take me to BJV, who are not far from me, and I drive within a mile of their workshop on 3 days every week. For a tyres off refurb including skimming to remove corrosion and minor kerbing, stripping, priming and painting they charge £24.50 with a warranty. That's good enough for me.

Perhaps BJV are not the greatest but my budget doesn't stretch to Pristine (I pass their workshop on the other 2 weekdays) who charge over £70 per wheel to do the same job. Perhaps they do the work better, but not three times better. I am simply not prepared to pay the difference for just a basic refurb of fairly old, simple, painted alloy wheels that are not perfect to start with.

I am not talking about three piece split rims and I am not looking for a concours d'elegance standard of finish, just something that will look presentable (for example) on a 12 year old car and extend the life of the wheels for a few more years.

On the other hand, someone who has invested a lot of money in some superb designer split rims with a far more sophisticated finish would be wise to avoid low cost operators and go to somewhere like Pristine. Different wheels, different market, different budget.

I'm sorry if I did not make that as clear as I should in my previous posting to the forum, and apologise for any misunderstanding caused.

I agree with your choice of refurber for this application but would question the warranty.
KLP was told to 'OFF' and the best they would do was do the job again at 20% off the price..

Thanks for that, Dieselman.

Forewarned is forearmed! I will report back with my experiences at a later date.

Pristine Wheels

Pristine did a fantastic job on my 17" AMG mono's, they were badly corroded and kerbed. Came up a treat. They can do splits, I think they charge about £200 per wheel, but will make them look brand new!

hi all should say mine did not need a refurb, they were just kerbed the body shop was kennington motors

cheers
