Geez , what needs done on a three year old car that requires £1k of work ?? Kenny
My first instinct tells me that if a 3 year old car needs a £1000 worth of advisories that they are trying to mug you. Stay clear!

More unfortunate timing than anything serious Kenny, see image.... Actually looking at that again I am really worried, I'm not sure they have quoted me for the pads!

Go to an Indy for that, especially something like discs and pads

They did the same for me when at service, qouted me the same for brakes and another £400 for two rear tyres

I politely declined, bought tyres myself from the Pneus website and have booked the car in for new discs/pads all round at my local Indy in January

So took it in today and they cleared a coolant temperature warning light, as no fault found. (Cost me £50 though).

I'm not so sure though, and have posted for the opinion of anyone who might be able to offer an opinion.

You're right to have doubts. Did they say if it was a high or low level temperature warning? I ask as my C180 204 came up with an EML due to a faulty thermostat triggering a low warning. Is the temperature running into the 90s or is it lower? I think mine was showing around 78 deg C at the time. One MB garage had 2 attempts at fixing it by updating the EM software; the other got it right first time. Fortunately it was under warranty so didn't cost. However, it was OK to run with.

I had the same amber engine light and an EPC dash message. It turned out to be a faulty upstream exhaust temperature sensor.

Where are you based? Members can help with a good Indy.

As for the tyres look at Blackcircle on the web for price comparison. I've used them in the past but only issue I would say is make sure to check their partner for fitting, as not always at the level you would expect it to be.

Hopefully, this will help.

By the way what is your mileage on the car?

I'm in Fife. 32,000.

Low temp warning. Temp was normally solid at high 80's, now I see it dipping below 80 briefly.

Ok, that's not bad if you were on original tyres and brakes pads. But I don't think the discs would need replacing if they are the original brake pads? I would definetly get a second opinion on the discs .

Does anyone know good Indy near Fife?

Original pads, but this will be the second set of tyres.

There was an MB Indy based in Dunfermline, but who would travel to your place. I can't remember whether he was on this board or t'other, but from what you have said, your brakes will be OK for a while yet with 4 and 5 mm pad thickness. However when you do them like others with an AMG, you will likely have to do the discs as well as they seem to wear more quickly than the non-drilled discs.

For your info, it was the Grangemouth dealership that identified my thermostat as being responsible for the EML. Also, I have used O'Neill in Glasgow for non warranty work; their charges are reasonable and they will only use genuine MB parts. They also have access to the MB database so all work is recorded.

I live in Dunfermline - any idea of the name of the indy referenced above?

Honestly, I can't remember, but at one point last year he was trying to establish who might be interested in using his services. From what he said, if I remember correctly, he was knowledgeable about MB. Going out at the moment, but will have a search later.

Looking in the "Specialist Across The UK" section, Automotive Specialists Dunfermline may fit the bill, don't know how up to date the info is tho.

I found this thread on the other side from 2014, but don't know if he got off the ground or not. Might be worth a phone call to check him out.

In the thread, he states that he has a unit near Queen Margaret's Hospital in Dunfermline, but isn't in a position to do work there so at the time had to be mobile only...don't know his back ground, though. Having said that, a number of John R. Weir's technicians left when Arnold Clark took over

Sooo, update. Car's been fine since they reset the warning light, until tonight. On a motorway drive and I noticed the amber light was on again, look at the engine temperature and it dropped from it's normal 90'ish to high 70's.

So it's booked in for Thursday, probably to get a new thermostat fitted as per previous comments here. 6 months out of warranty, I'll be looking for a little goodwill contribution!

"Did I say I might be changing car in October? Now about this thermostat...."

Bloody hell, vehicle check complete....

Stored fault for heating element at coolant thermostat, coolant thermostat would have to be replaced and to access this the intake manifold has to be removed !!

£538!!
