AMG GT has arrived

Congratulations mate very nice.

That's stunning Andrew - enjoy. The nice chaps at Derby Mercedes let me take a GTS out the other day (not yours I hasten to add) and all I will say is that it's a good job I hadn't driven that car before I placed the C63 order. It's outrageous, and I look forward to your detailed write up in due course.

Thanks all :thumb:

After the extra long wait, I bet you can't wait until Friday. Have fun, and fingers crossed for a dry day to enjoy it on :) :)

I am definitely hoping for nice weather, and it's looking favourable at the minute

I know the car....was the one that turned me off Hyacinth red (which strangely looks a lot better on other models like the GLE they have in the showroom?)

Funnily enough, I drove a C63 after I placed the order for the GT but before I drove the GT. It was soooo good that I nearly cancelled the GT and bought the C63, which was my spec hadn't been locked down yet, the dealer were happy to do. I couldn't see how the GT was £50k's worth of value extra. You will not and cannot be disappointed with that car!

Then I drove the GT, and that was a mistake (for my finances). Actually, I still don't think it's worth £50k extra in any objective or performance related way. Actually nothing is, because I believe these high performance saloons from Merc/BMW etc. offer an almost perfect blend of performance, capability, luxury and value - anything beyond and you're in the realms of diminishing returns.

However the GT does feel like a proper hunkered down sports car (if that's what you want) and having a large proportion based on the SLS (and actually feeling like a better developed SLS), it does have a rather unique and special feel about how it goes down the road. This feel, such as the amazing turn-in, is quite unique and does set it apart from anything else, including any competitor that I've come across (F-Type, 911, R8 etc). It may not be as well honed, and therefore not as overly capable, as a 911 for instance, but it feels so much more special, more of an event, as a result.

Congrats bud, enjoy it and try to keep it for longer than 6 months! ;)

Crikes, SIX whole months?!!?

If anything is going to do it then an expensive brand new car (with what I'm sure will be painful early depreciation) that's a event to drive and remains a genuine everyday-useable car (unlike the SLS) might just do the trick :D

Don't get me wrong - I am head over heels in love with my C63, and it does everything I need a car to do brilliantly, but....

think you nailed it when you said that driving the GTS is an event. It completely blew me away. Practicality probably would have won out in the end, but I could have easily spent weeks deliberating over whether the extra £50k was worth it (so saved me some considerable heartache by not driving it beforehand).

Roll on Friday!

Hi Palmball

All your pics from the OP have vanished :(

Congratulations on the vehicle, I must have missed this thread previously

I notice you have owned an SLS in the past. How do you find the GT compared to the SLS.

Red really suits the GT. I think it's the size of the car as it worked well on C class 204's but looks odd on anything bigger.

Agreed that flat red does not suit larger cars - looks cheap. I was concerned it would look cheap on the GT but having seen it in person, it's just fine.

I don't honestly know as I've not taken delivery yet and only had the demonstrator for a couple of days. I'll do a full camparo once I've collected it and done a few miles so keep an eye out next week.

From the limited time I had in the GT, what I can say is this:

Subjectively, the GT feels less overtly outrageous, more normal. Just like you'd expect a 911 to feel - not a 'supercar' but still very special nonetheless. This makes it much more appropriate for daily use although currently both stop traffic equally as effectively - I imagine this will subside for GT as it becomes more familar but I suspect it'll always look and feel a cut above a 911/F-Type because it will never be as popular.

Objectively, the GT feels massively better developed. Like the finished article whereas the SLS (both of the ones I had) often had some odd noises and characterwhich I suspect more development time would've ironed out. Quite simply, the GT is better made, has a much nicer ambience, it feels more planted, stable and keyed into the road and it's in a different league technology wise.

I don't think the engine gives anything away to the 6.2 but I'll reserve judgement until I've lived with it for a while. From memory (I drove it two months ago now!) my initial thoughts are that it sounds laugh-out-loud fantastic and a lot more brutal than the SLS (if you can imagine that's possible), yet it is somewhat contrived as AMG have obviously needed to use some trickery to make it sound so well. Is it better or worse?....I don't think I can ever answer that question as each has their advantages. And almost no disadvantages!

Where the new 4.0 engine is 'better' is in its effectiveness - its much more grunty low down the rev range but the power continues to grow with revs all th way to the red line, just like you'd want it to. This is very unlike a lot of modern turbos where there's no apparent need to rev them - the AMG 5.5 bi turbo is a good example of this where it's probably more effective at 4k than it is at 6k (which suits a big saloon/SUV but not a sports car).

That's about the best I can do from memory between the GT and SLS but if I was to summarise in one sentence, then I'd say the GT is the better car (embarrassingly so in some instances) yet the SLS will always remain the more special car. Probably just like AMG intended?

I think that's exactly the feeling they wanted to get. I hope you really enjoy the new car and I hope you keep it a while!!!

Thanks, I didn't realise you hadn't picked it up yet. I'll be interested in your opinion of the new car compared to the SLS after you've had it a while.
Nice spec I'm a fan of Carbon Ceramics as I had them on my Boxster although a very expensive option new they never cover the wheels with brake dust and always look in proportion to larger diameter wheels.

Ah yes, the ceramics were a totally unnecessary indulgence. The standard brakes are outstanding.

But I like them for two reasons - 1, they look great and 2, no brake dust. That's it. A little silly specifying them for those reasons alone really, but then never having any brake dust is remarkably convenient for a daily driver!

Yes JBD, I do like my AMG's and this GT really is superb so hopefully it will be a bit longer term than most.

My dealer have just sent me a photo of it after a 2 day prep session and G-technique Crystal Serum coating. Red really does shine well :D

Andrew, try to get some sleep tonight. You will need to be well awake tomorrow. Hope your happy with it. Let me know in a couple of months when your ready to sell
