When I had my AMGs refurbished recently, Lepsons tried very hard to persuade me to have the whole thing painted instead of having the rims shiny. They said that there is NO guarantee with the shiny rim, but a full 12 months for whole thing painted. Naturally, I opted for the shiny rim

However, one week and 700 miles later, the front near side shiny bit already has a small stone chip on it -- exactly what Lepsons say happens, leading to water under lacquer, then corrosion, then nasty coloured milky stuff on shiny rim  :(

I'm distraught but brainwave of sorts ;) I took the lacquer stick from my MB touch up paint, and touched up the stone chip. Am hoping that this will slow down if not stop that slight stone chip becoming an unsightly mess. Fingers and much else crossed :) :)

Got me worried now.

My AMG wheels are in to be refurbished next week.

Off course want the polished finish on the rims

Will have to wait and see what the company says.

I like the shiny lacquered rims on mine - but they are a right pain to keep clean. Once they get even the slightest bit dirty they detract from the shiny look, and they might as well be painted.

Having said that, they come up great when cleaned, and the weather is getting better now, so hopefully won't need major cleaning so often.

(I must keep away from any more Kerbs though !)

Hi

When the AMG's were refurbished the first time on my last car they left the shiny rim bare. Polishing with Autosol kept them good for three years but it takes time and is a pain in the winter when the roads are salted. I eventually got them refurbed and lacquered because i got tired of polishing although theshine i used to achieve was much better than the lacquered affair.

Ive just bought a set of deep dish wheels, they have a stainless steel lip, so its shiny but a lot less hassle to look after.

I was planning to use diamond brite on them, when I get round to it.

I reckon you're fine with applying lacquer - in fact it has to be the best thing you can do. When wheels are refurbished they start out being stripped, then powdercoated and baked. The rims are then turned on a lathe to remove the coating giving the polished appearance, then lacquered to preserve it.

So all you're doing is sealing the damaged area and this will keep the water out. Good plan my man!

Ian.
