As far as the joke, I think it's the old those that do those that don't one...

Still not exactly right, but I cannot figure out the joke even with the correct maths. But this is no problem for me, I don't have to convince my wife we need two cars. :D

CJ in JonnyCJ stands for crap jokes....

I thought the binary joke was.

There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary and those that don't

I thought the binary joke was:

"there are two types of people in this world, those that for some unfathomable reason can discern a joke from a stream of '0's and '1's posted in a random mash on the MB forum; and those (the vast majority) who haven't a flippin' clue what you lot are babbling on about."

We've thought about this subject at length and decided on a slightly different approach. Given that we live very near my parents we have talked about having 3 cars between 2 families, in other words effectively having a pool car.

Only choice is whether it will be my E-Class or the Honda Jazz( ), I know where my vote will be going.

How would that work from an insurance point of view (assuming you want it to be legit) ... premium is based on where the car will be kept, and who the 'main driver' is.

My parents live 20 yards across the road, so geography not an issue.

Main driver can be anyone of the people involved as insurance is rated on the youngest driver anyway(36). Will just be proposer + 3 named. Mileage differentials involved will be minimal. this is just a scaling up of one car with two equal drivers.

Man was not meant to survive on one vehicle alone.....

In the Uberwagon toybox is..

A 14 foot touring Kayak
2 Mountain bikes, one rigid, one downhill.
1 Prokart
1 Motorbike
1 Project
1 Daily driver Merc

I need to add a series 3 Land Rover and then the toybox will be complete.

It's not how much money you have in the bank, but how many toys in the garage which counts.

Dave!

Bugs me that there are often 4 cars sitting usused outside our house. Looking at my neighbours, many of whom are retired, they're the same too.

What we really need is a car club - our village would be perfect for one.

Cars are really cheap which is part of the issue - you can pick up a working car with tax and mot for the price of a couple of tanks of petrol..

In London the insurance cost is a bit more prohibitive and parking is an issue. Up north my retired parents have 3 cars.... not sure why.

I live in London so having two cars is very marginal indeed.

I have the Merc which does 4000 mile a year max. Mainly weekends away with the odd business trip to and office that someone has put in a stoopid place - ie not near a tube stop or railway station.

The Clio does less than 1000 (the baby buggy does more!)

The only reason we have two is for the odd occasion that I need to drive to client and Nicky needs to drive the kids somewhere (this usually only when it's REALLY raining hard).

I guess this will change when my boy starts primary school in Septmeber. It's about 1.5 miles away which is just too much to walk every day - esp is weather is very bad.

Still, this still means that we'll actually need two cars about twice a month rather that once.

On the plus side I quite enjoy the odd trip across town in the Clio - it's a 1.6 16V and it's a hoot. Reminds me of my youth hooning around in various Italian hot hatches. Very different from the Merc.

Just one word. TAXI.

Given that the Clio does approx 1000 miles per year, it would be cheaper to get a taxi when two cars are required.

Don't think cost is really what comes into it, some of it is about convenience and the other angle is having access to a different type of car, e.g. compact hatch, estate / MPV / 4x4 etc.

This is where the car club idea comes in - If it would work an MBClub car club sounds like a good plan :D

As a plan:

Smart Car / A / B Class - for city use
C / E Class - longer trips SL - for nice days
E Class Estate - load lugging
CLS / S Class - for special occassions / dress to impress
G Wagen - Work horse
ML - Need to go low profile in Chelsea
GL / R Class - space for 6 or 7

throw in some AMG's for fun and we're all set...

Can we have a boat club too?? I am happy for someone to borrow my dinghy in exchange for access to a yacht moored in Monaco. :D

Would be interesting to see my "calendar". 2 cars on the drive, neither of which get used for commuting. Ride the motorbike to work, and have another bike rusting slowly in the garage for when I finally have time to get around to doing it up.

Could easily sell 50% of them, but won't/don't want to.
