I didn't want to hijack the other thread so.........

Have decided - this has to be the next mod for mine. Current plates are screwed on - screws have gone rusty and look naff - has been buggin me for some time now. Just have to find the right backing plates. I don't think I ant black - think I'm going to have to find the chrome ones . I don't want to BLING the car - but since modding the grille - I think black would look odd and chrome better. Opinions please?

Number Plate Surround

Pammy, what about carbon fibre, real or effect, when viewed its a mix of black and silver lattice. Its a roadster after all. Would tend to think chrome would blend into "Bbbriliant Sssilver" to much.

PS I think theres an upload problem at the moment.

it's a thought - I have the bird's eye maple wood finish inside, which is also black and silver, but obviously a naturally random subtle pattern. I wonder if the carbon fibre would clash

number plate surround

Pammy, been out in the sun all day so didnt see your last post. I really think carbon fibre lattice would look cool. All the other colours are black, gold, green, chrome, red, yawn... see what I mean?. One idea would be:- say you had a fave colour ;) , buy the black one along with some plastic etching primer (small aerosol can also from Halfords) and similar small aerosol of your fave colour. A couple of fun hours later, Bobs yer whatsit :). I think it would be to small a job for MB HGT so it would be fun as a DIY job. Mmnnnn... cellulose, nothing in the world smells quite like cellulose son, I love the smell of cellulose in the morning, woaaa, I'm back in the Nam again :o . How about a mid metallic blue?, I think your SLK will have what I understand to be called "Heritage Laurel Leaf" wheel centres which have a mid blue rear colour set against the silver star and MB wording, just a thought.

didn't :o and tbh - this has totally gone from my mind until just now :o

It got overtaken by my seeing if I could find a decent private plate but as I couldn't I forgot all about it :o

So I'm sticking with my plate - but will have to have a look and see what I can find in the way of mounts. Might mention it when I go to the dealers on Saturday for the first service :D

number plate holder

My number plate has my daughters name in it and the screws holding it to the car did get in the way of the letters..(sods law) my dealer put 2 plate holders on the car the plates fit perfectly in the holders and are secured with double sided stickey pads and look very effective with out the screws in. and very good for personal reg numbers especially if you have ones with a name in...

I got a carbon fibre effect surround for mine when I bought the car. I really like it as the lettering on my number plates is also a subtle CF effect plus I have the sport trim. :o

.........very nice but why have you still got Screws showing? Surely the idea is to stick the plate in the surround having already screwed the surround to the car??

If there are screws going through the plate it defies the point of having the plate holder in the first place!

My car has black plastic plate holders which were supplied from new, not oem parts but aftermarket, dunno where they came from originally but lots of stealerships use them.

I like the glued-on plate look, screws suck.

Maybe I am weird or because I am a Chemical Engineer but I prefer to have screws securing the number plate, they are stainless so should never rust and polish up a treat.

doesn't stop the plate from separating where the holes have been drilled, seen that on a lot of cars! Lose the screws Steve, get some shiny new plates and stick 'em to the holder with sticky tabs, looks a lot cleaner! :)

The car originally came with stick on plates and I changed them to screws as I prefer them :p

Heh no accounting for taste eh Nick? :p One man's meat is another man's poison :D

I prefer screws because I just 'think' of them as more of a secure fixing than adhesive. I know that's not really the case these days but that's just me. :)

If I really wanted to go down the route of stuck on plates I think I would dispense with 'plates' altogether and go for painted on registration marks like the old Jaguar E-Types as I think that really has the cleanest look about it.

You should have seen me with my foot against the bootlid pulling the old plates off! The sticky pads are there to stay! Even when they finally came off there was sticky stuff all over the plates and the frame. I had to fix the pads in different locations (used a whole set of pads for each plate) to avoid applying it over the residue.

Anyway, who cares if the plate *does* come off? Can get another one made up the same day if neccessary.

I think you have more chance in trying to convince to change to an Avantgarde grille than you have in getting me to give up number plate screws :p

Screws look OK if right up in the top corners for the front plate, covered with the correct coloured plastic caps to match, and on the rear plate, if you are able to drill so as not to obscure any of the letters with the screws, and again use the correct coloured plastic caps !

(not my choice .... dealers !)

... But I'll be getting some new plates made up soon and sticking them on instead .... ooh, and maybe a chrome surround for the rear one !

:)
