Anti - Virus Software

AVG is a good free anti-virus program, but it is not an Internet Security program. So, if you use Internet Banking, your credit or debit card etc then you really need something better than AVG. Kaspersky is a very good program and better to use than Norton products.

I changed from Norton a couple of years ago, as it started becoming expensive and resource hungry, so now I use Kaspersky without any problems. I also use AVG on machines not requiring Internet Banking etc.

Cheers

AVG gets my vote as well. The new version 8 is so much better than the older version. Norton.........had it once, also had a motorbike with the same name, was also unreliable:( :D

AVG on its own will not give sufficient cover, but with the additional Firewall you are getting adequate cover.

Cheers

I use Avast and windows firewall on vista...............am I not protecting enough??

If you are a Barclays customer you can get Kapersky for free (3 PC licence). I currently use AVG and have only ever had 1 infection that was stopped with no problems. However I've heard the new AVG is a little resource hungry so will be switching to Kapersky.

Thanks for that - am not downloading my free software from them...

Windows firewall should protect you from incoming problems, but will not stop you sending out problems such as viruses, trojans etc should you computer become infected. Therefore, to be as secure as possible a third party, two-way firewall is what is really recommended. Have a look here http://www.firewallguide.com/

Am now running Kaspersky's suite... free from Barclays. I am assuming I am better off using their firewall rather than Vista's? Or should i enable both- will they clash?

I think they will clash

I'm not sure you can run both, not advisable anyway. As Viking2 pointed out pretty much any commercial firewall is better than a M$ offering as it will alert on both incomming and outgoing threats. I personally use Sunbelt Kerio, an exceptional product which cost peanuts with the US exchange rate the way it is.

You can run it in advanced mode if like me you want to know whenever an application gets up to shenanegans or just let it run quietly in the background. I think you can run it in a "lite" mode after the full 30 day trial runs out and it still does a good job as a basic firewall, with the occasional "nag".

Lot's of the lads at work say AGV is one of the best free ones.

AGV is presumably the Mexican, non-union alternative to AVG ;)

That said I have little time for AVG as it let through a fairly catastrophic trojan on my parents' pc resulting in rebuild attempts and ultimately a new PC.

No problems with AVG here - using free edition on the home PCs and about 90% of my customers are using AVG corporate editions. No complaints about resource hogging or letting anything through, and it seldom needs a reboot after update. Central management on the corporate versions is quite good too.

I use a free one - does what it says and no bloatware. No problems after 7 years use on several computers.

Add Windows Defender, IE7, a hardware router and a little bit of common sense. And keep the high-priority auto update on unless you have good reason not to.

Do the above and you won't have problems (provided you keep the most important component - common sense - working properly.....

No matter which system you use, you are likely to think it is great until it lets something through or causes you some other sort of problem.

Many years ago I used Dr Soloman's anti-virus kit. It was always great but was then bought out. Having tried McAfee and Norton I ended up with Kaspersky.

I used to use Zone Alarm pro until the problems when version 7 came out, then I switched to the full Kaspersky Internet Security Suite. The only problem is the warning like a bird being strangled when it intercepts an incoming virus or trojan. It does that enough for me to be happy that it's working. With a two year licence, the cost per day is peanuts compared to the trouble I would have disinfecting a corrupted PC.

In the past I have used Norton, Kasparsky (sp?) and others, but over the last 2 years or so have stuck with AVG Free.

Sure, you still need to reformat every so often, but IMO no more than when using "premium" AV software.

I'll be sticking with AVG as long as it is free and as competent as it appears.
