Car
mercedes of course
basically i know if u send a scan of logbook to mercedes, they will send a letter confirming the date of manufacture of car in this case RHD w107.

i wondered if there is an unofficial way to check given the chassis no if a car was manufactured before 1973 although registered in the uk in 1973 or if it is an import it was registered as 1976 whilst it is the old shape it could have been made 1972.

i have 2 in question one is 6xxx chassis no and looks good to be manufactured in 1972 but registered in early 1973.

the other is very hopeful 3xxxx which sounds like it is post 1972 so no chance of it being made in 1972. but worth a punt since it is a convertible.

i want to avoid the long winded way by scanning and sending the logbook. and waiting for a letters.

any tricks or experts who know any of the chassis made in 1972 then 1973 even volume.

both cars are RHD btw

If you write to MB in Stuttgart , including proof of ownership ( photocopy of V5 will do ) , they will give you a 'birth certificate' for your car - there is a fee for this . You shoud be able to do this via the Oldtimer Centre .

With older cars (1950's) it was just a case of reversing the first two digits of the chassis no to get the year : with my Ponton 7501972 indicates a 1957 car :D

Dealer ought to be able to help .

will the russian site not accept the VIN for those cars ?

Unreliable and often inaccurate.

Send me the VIN/chassis number and i'll see what I can dig up from EPC.

I had a problem with DVLA last year when i bought my 450sl , which had been subject to a cherished registration change. The DVLA said the numbers didnt relate to my vehicle ( this despite the fact that the previous owner for 23 years had taken the car there a couple of years ago when he bought a personal plate). Contacted MB customer assistance center , Maastricht , and spoke to John Pearson , ( a Bristolian ) ,who sent me a letter , at no charge ,
confirming that my car was built sometime in November 1973 , and this was accepted by DVLA.
International freephone number is 00800 9 777 7777. No need to send proof of ownership , he told me the month of manufacture over the phone , confirming it in writing at my request .

hopefully i will be pleasently surprised!!, and get in writing to go back to the dvla for a change on them if they are not correct!!.

now they require proof of ownership to give the details but if u tell them u r in the process of buying it and u need it for that reason they may give it to u, and mention mbclub too as this help

Pm me the reg number and I can supply you with all you need. :D

Try taking out an ashtray or coin tray or similar and it will probably have the date of its manufacture on the back. That will help you to narrow dates down.

John
