Anyone else got McAfee?

A couple of days ago McAfee required me to do a download/update, and since then my internet connection speed seems to be reduced quite a lot. It also has slowed down the opening of other applications. I have Virus Guard, Personal Firewall and so on...any ideas oh clever ones?

McAfee firewall is renown for slowing things down. As a result of this I binned it and AVG and Kerio

Funny thing is Ian, I have had McAfee security center for years, and the firewall has never really affected my speed.Oh, and I just switched the firewall off and it made no difference...any ideas?

Back when we had a corporate license for McAfee it was notorious for slowing computers down. Try temporarily disabling the on-access scanning. If that helps, check out their knowledge base articles to see if there's anything there.

We use McAfee for all 30,000 client PC's here.

I havn't seen a case raised with the helpdesk about any slow downs recently so I suspect your problem isnt solely related to the recent McAfee DAT file.

First stop would be to try some speed tests with and without it running to see the extent of the problem and whether it is indeed effected by McAfee or something else.

Ah ha-Been onto the helpful chap at McAfee online chat support and have temporarily resolved the problem. It seems there is a problem with the McAfee 'redirector service' and each time on start up I need to set the status of this to 'stopped'. Apparently, once the next update is released by McAfee, this known issue will be fixed and all will be dandy again. By the way Sp!ke, did you manage to resolve the ADSL problem for your mother?

That would make sense... we push out our updates internally rather than getting them from McAfee.

ADSL.... no, I dont think itsa resolved. She seems to have just accepted that she cant use the phone when connected I think.

Must sort it out at some point I guess.
