Arnold Clark poised to buy J R WEIR GROUP

Thanks for the replies, car is now booked in with Grangemouth - I will report back afterwards

I was just a bit apprehensive as I was less than impressed a few years ago when I owned an Alfa with Arnold Clark's Perth Alfa dealer.

Suffice to say ALFA ROMEO chose not to renew their franchise with AC and it went to THE WESTERN GROUP. [ They of the late lamented SAAB franchise] afaik they are still on the go. AC still retain the Fiat Dealership - selling mainly Fiat 500's if their showroom is anything to go by. Saw a rather nice white 500 ABARTH there the other day.

Talking to the Abz dealership's parts dept last week (they are posting me out a small seal I need) and have been told that posting out small parts is still permitted but delivery of parts to homes is not. Pity, as when my car was in bits 35miles from the dealers and 3miles from the nearest bus stop, them delivering a chunky (gear selector) motor by van was a great help to me.

I really am hoping they do not adopt the attitudes I've seen in AC dealerships (BBC3 sit-com stuff) and for now - in the parts dept at least - the staff are too good to let that happen.

Arnold Clark have taken over Verve VW as well. We have a long time relationship with them having bought loads of GTIs and R32s. So far the guys are happy. There has been a marked increase in business and the guys can't get hold of enough cats to sell. However as we have read above, watch this space.

Belmont Kemnay CHRYSLER/JEEP dealers were owned by the John MARTIN group at one time. Arnold Clark already has the the Chrysler dealership in Perth as part of the J R Weir group. Kemnay Chrysler - New & Used Chrysler Cars in Scotland .
Murray Motors Glasgow were also part of the John Martin group Murray Motor Company (Glasgow) Chrysler and are CHRYSLER dealers also.
It would appear that ARNOLD CLARK will control many, if not all, the Chrysler/Jeep outlets in Scotland.
The irony is that this is the very type of monopolistic situation the 2013 EEC legislation is supposed to combat.

ps Rumour is that ARNOLD CLARK [ aka J R WEIR Perth ] have also severed links with Subaru meaning one less Suby dealership in Scotland.:(

My sister recently bought a '09 plate VW Golf from AC Renault outlet in Paisley ; the car had originally been supplied , then serviced , by their VW dealership in Linwood , so we took it there to have a couple of minor issues looked at under warranty .

The staff there could not have been more helpful - even though we had bought from another branch , and drove in unannounced , we were treated courteously and politely , both matters ( a key fob which needed re-coded to the car and a damaged piece of trim which needed replaced ) were fitted in without prior booking and completed within an hour , with the warranty being agreed over the phone with the supplying branch .

My sister will be going there to take up her three years free servicing and MOT's from Arnold Clark whilst keeping the car within the VW dealer network ( and the same dealer who has serviced the car thus far ) . I will also use them for parts for the older Golf we took over from my sister .

This is one Arnold Clark outlet who have so far made a good impression .

In fairness, AC in Dundee were very good. AC in Aberdeen were abysmal.

Not a good start here.

Tried to book my E-Class in to get it checked as per This recall.

Promises to phone back, never happened.

I phoned back at 4:30, then I was cut off , a few minutes later I called again, this time the service desk, didn't know how to update the record on the "new system" and landed up cutting me off again.

Think its quicker just to drive up there on Wednesday. :wallbash:

So, now the Humble Pie moment from me.

JSWMBO decided that the time was right for her to buy a new car. She wanted a Mini. Note the word 'wanted' in that sentence. She WANTED a Mini.

As the local dealership was literally just up the road from my office, I arranged to meet her there and do 'the Dad thing'.

Knowing that the local dealership was an AC branch I feared the worst - especially as we had a terrible experience last year with SWMBO's purchase of her VW Polo. The VW Polo she 'wanted' .... get the drift ...

So I duly parked my car round the corner and left my daughter to park her car in the dealership carpark.

What can I say ? The process was a breeze. Salesman was good, car was discounted well and the trade-in value more than expected.

Anyone got a fork ?

Arnold Clark Grangemouth - Beware

I think it's now fair to assume that Arnold Clark have completely ruined the Grangemouth dealership.

We have bought our last 8 cars new from this dealership, always specified exactly the way we want them and then been loyal to the dealership for servicing.

A few weeks ago I wanted to take one of the older '53 W211 in for them to have a look at (judder under accelerating & heavy steering).
This car was under a Mercedes all singing extended warranty through till I think 2011.

First thing I noticed was how difficult it was to book this, multiple calls to the dealer, no one available and the promise of a returned call never happened. Our old contacts are no longer there.

Eventually managed to get it booked in for them to have a look at.

When I went back to collect the car I was told it was "coolant in the ATF".
Pointed out I was sure it was a Behr radiator as I had raised the question while car was under warranty.
Also asked if a glycol test had been done which was responded by "sounds as if you know more about car than we do".

Was told an estimate for the Torque Convertor would be emailed over later that day.

A few weeks later and despite several calls to the dealership, nothing.
To me that is just shocking from such a perceived premium brand.

We have two very low mileage W212 and are really at a loss now what to do about servicing and replacement.

Certainly wont buy a new vehicle from this dealership and the other Mercedes dealers are a bit far away, even now considered visiting the local BMW dealership and having a look at the 5 series.

Surely this isn't the way that Mercedes Benz want things to pan out?

I am just about to send my TC down to Dronsfields for a recon £350 plus vat. My car has the same issues as yours. My gearbox is ok, it's the TC which is slipping.

It's not what John R Weir was back in the day. We moved all our purchases to Newbridge and they are brilliant. I would not give the Glasgow dealers a penny of my money.

Your nearest alternative would be Mercedes-Benz of Edinburgh & Coldstream part of the Eastern/Western group that have range of dealerships for various manufacturers
New Car Dealer Scotland, Used Car Dealer Scotland, Luxury Cars Scotland

Thanks, I think it will be Newbridge in the short term for service.

Going to get the W211 up on our newly installed 2 Post Lift this week and strip it down for a look.
Guessing it will be a recon on the TC that will be required.

Tells a story when customers feel it's better to install their own garage equipment and do the job themselves.

Interesting to here the views on Arnold Clark as I recently bought a 5 year old C180K from the Arnold Clark Stoke Motorstore. To be honest I'm not a fan of any dealer and they weren't perfect but both the cars preparation and subsequent warranty work was far better than the experiences I've been reading about with MB main dealers. At least they tried to have the right attitude and didn't refuse any reasonable request. Bearing in mind I'd have paid something like 10% more at a main dealer I don't think Arnold Clark were that bad at all.

Don't forget for service repairs and warranty work there is Glen Henderson in Ayr. A first class authorised repairer with top class mechanics. I used to buy my cars from them when they were the main dealer in Ayr.
