ATF dip stick..

I dont have experience with that actual one..
There is no reason that you couldnt use it as long as you are aware of the "official" measurements of the full Hot & Cold marks..
That price is very good indeed.. I got a so called official MB Tool which was 15 times that price !!!

The measurements you need are indicated on the photo below (Taken from my "Official Tool" as it were. :D

I got a similar one about a year ago before I changed the box oil, my only problem was seeing where the clean oil was, it was fine with the dirty stuff! If you have similar problems dab it on some kitchen roll.

Yeah enquired with MB and they said it was 40 odd quid. Think i will get one off ebay and see. I aasume the upper mark (80) is the normal full operating temp..

I bought the same one but mine was from Poland nd cost me just under £10.00 but it is good and does the job.

Mine is longer than the dipstick tube and works by bottoming inside the box, not on the outside of the tube as regular dipsticks do. For mine at least the second pic posted by sspeed is not applicable.

The genuine mb dipsticks are the same, push in untill it bottoms out.
Dipstick is longer than tube so that it can be used on all models with varying lengths of dipstick tube

A suitably modified 'pound shop' drain unblocker, essentially bowden cable sheath, will also do the job used with a tape measure (although with good clear aft it can be tricky to read).

Yeah it says in the ad, it just pushes in until it bottoms out..

The problem with a non Mercedes one is whether it goes in straight or not, it is difficult to tell if it has bottomed out straight or is at an angle.

The Merc one has a nipple at the top, this allows the measurement part to go in as far as it is meant to but stops it going any further.

Hold on, I will show you what I mean with the pic above.

OK, this is Merc one as above with the nipple to make sure it goes in straight and in exactly the right place.....

Here's the thing...the genuine one does NOT bottom out...the little diamond shape above the top measurement stops it bottoming out.

So, when using a home made one or the Ebay one make sure to be aware of this and subtract (or is it add) 1 cm to the measurements you get to be correct.

Yes it is.. To check properly when you have chaged the ATF the car needs to be thoroughly warmed up..
Not just a hot engine but a working temp gearbox (which takes considerably longer).. Do at least a 10 mile drive and THEN check it..
Leave the engine running then work the select thru the gears PDrive and Reverse)to make sure to gearbox is fully primed. Leave the car ticking over in Neutral or Park and then check your levels..

Its not real problem as you take a rag, top up ATF and of course your dipstick with you..

As Renault12TS says you need to subtract 1cm from the mark on your dipstick if you are using a none Mercedes version.

You would think as the "fake" bottoms out they would have added the extra 1cm on the the end.

When i get it i will compare to the measurements in the pic...

Cheers Chaps..:thumb:

I bought one just the other day. Similar price, same red end. Good quality and does the job. Just double check the end measurements. Various pictures on the net (including the one posted here earlier) shows the correct range to be 55-65mm.

The comment about not being able to see the oil on the dipstick is true too! The fluid, apparently, loses its colour after a few years.

I found my readings extremely sensitive to the temperature. I gave the car a 20+ minute run. Stopped and checked and first reading couldn't see anything! Second or third try and the oil level started to show. A few minutes idling and it had warmed up more with a higher read! Quite a surprise - its been much more straight-forward with other makes and older mercedes models.

Man, if we could somehow have this nailed once and for all! I've read discussions on other forums about this and not many people agree with this. People show pictures of transmissions with the pans dropped and the dipstick sticking out freely.

1cm out would be damaging (low or high). Has anyone actually tested this with the pan down?
