Ok so this is what i got off eBay..

IMG_0026_zpsa8fbec4e.jpg

Instructions.
1. Drive car to reach normal operating temp.

2. Remove factory cap from gearbox oil tube.

3. Gently insert dipstick until it stops.

4. Some of the dipstick will stick out from top, this is normal.

5. Withdraw and check level, it should be between the top and bottom of the ferule, if its on the red it is too low and if above the ferule its too full.

Red section is 2 1/8" then ferule goes up to 2 1/2" or just over.
What do you recon..??

That's the same I have (incl the instructions). The ferule covers the 55-65mm range. The issue is renault12ts et al proposing that this should be a further 1cm. Personally I'm skeptical of it. I want to do some tests to get a better view, but not in this snow..

Go ahead and do the measurement. It'll at least give you an idea of the process and show if there are any obvious issues. Just don't be trigger-happy adding fluid at the first read.

Why sceptical? Yes the measures on the one you have are the same as the proper one...no doubt about that.

BUT...the one you have will stop when it hits the bottom of the sump...the proper one will stop above the bottom of the sump because it is designed with a wider bit that hits a stop (see pic, again, in post 12).

It's not rocket science. The only way you will be convinced is if you use both and compare the results. You will have to do this for yourself however. Post 18 in the thread I referred to earlier has, however, done it for you. It's up to you...don't shoot the messenger.

Wouldn't dream of shooting a well-informed messenger. I was just airing my unease. I have checked with another well-informed member as well now and he confirms the same as you.

So now I have a real problem with the red ended stick OP mentions (and I have). Not too sure if the ferule on it does a slight sticking job as well or whether it does run through to the bottom. Can't wait to see my car re-appear from under all the snow to do a few tests.

Thanks for your patience.

No probs.

Refer to the link I put up from the US site...someone posts a pic measuring the width of the stop on the dipstick.

When the gen one arrives and i get round to it, i will have a dip with both the gen and none gen and see if there is a difference..

Typical, these have just landed on eBay..

Mercedes Benz CLK320/CLK500/CLK55/SL55 722.6 Transmission Dipstick Tool | eBay

With all the debate over the none genuine ones i may just get one..

Well just for my peace of mind i have gone for it and ordered one of the genuine ones from the link i put up..

That one you linked to is not one with the diamond nipple? :dk:

As I linked to earlier, this is the same as the Merc one at 1/3 the price.

Sorry, just realised the one you linked to does have the nipple.

MB Dipstick tool vs just a hanger wire/ home made dipstick tool

No probs.

Well, I did the check based on 34.5" from renault's reference post and the red ebay stick. The difference is certainly 12mm - infact mine is giving more like 16mm.

This is just confirming what's already been thrashed out (and with very detailed discussions and tests). The problem, of course, is that searching previous posts and "Stickies" mainly results in finding the earlier (incorrect) view based on the MB stick hitting pan bottom (as would be logical). I guess people will keep getting trapped by this one..

Cheers everyone
