Attempted theft of the SEC

cant believe it!!!!

it must definately have been to order, you have one of the best SEC's in the country and some of the bits you have on it are very rare and cost a fortune.

i would ensure its always in the garage, i would invest in CCTV at your house, its always a good deterent.

I use wheel clamps if the car is going to be left for a period.

They will be watching you so be careful.

There was a S600, C270CDI, CLK350 covertible on my drive last night, so the SEC was probably the least expensive!
Hence all my points about this appearing to be a set of professional people after a very specific vehicle.

I'm angry. (again)

Regards
John

Really sorry to hear about this, very lucky you caught them in time to save your recently fixed pride and joy.

I agree with the others that it sounds like a theft to order but one thought that popped into my head when you mentioned the other cars in your drive was the SEC being the easiest to steal with the other cars being more modern with better anti-theft gear installed and integrated.

nah no way, the detail they went to to get into and take the car without any real damage indicated they were after this car...

its a well known SEC, its on this and probably other forums, its been in a magazine recently and Nav has probably taken it to various shows...
it would only take someone to follow him home and then they could be watching for weeks/months for the opportunity to arrive.

This exact same thing happened with an Isuzu Trooper we had... it was worth about £15K at the time, kept behind 7ft iron gates for weeks, until one day i nipped out to the shops... it was gone and we got a picture from the police 3 months later showing the bare shell... parts had all been sent abroad...they actually had a key cut from the dealer... all you need is the code off the original key to get a duplicate from the dealer. They had been to view the car the week before and must have noted down this number...

if someone wants something, they will stop at nothing to take it...

Perhaps someone is envious?

I doubt it, supposedly there are loads of stolen South African cars driving around Lagos and nobody cares becuase it's that corrupt.

They may have to change the steering side as Nigeria has banned RHD cars since 1995.
They mainly break them up for parts.

Nobody enforces the RHD thing in Nigeria, and they only send them out in bits because you can get more in a container and the import duty is less on parts than cars.

They soon get put back together...

Believe me mate ,they do. And it is not economically viable anyway as you will have to pay close to 200naira which is a lot to police officials if you want to cross any checkpoints with that kind of car and they line up the roads at literally every 20mins looking for money with very big guns
It is that bad.

As jaymanek says probably stolen to order! Sadly they probably read all about the car on this forum!

We've send a good few RHDs over there, cars, trucks and busses, perhaps it depends on what part of Nigeria it is?

yes you may have as i have as well because there is a time grace to sort it out but having lived there for 25yrs and own a driving licence + had to take driving lessons and learn the laws of the road, when corrunption was not in an epidemic state as it is now, i am telling you how it is.
You can do but it is not viable as it will be a money pit for corrupt law enforcement.
Further more it is a suicide trap as all the roads out of town e. Lagos/portharcourt/benin with the exception of lagos-ibadan expressway are all single carraigeways so you can forget about overtaking.
I actually saw a shogun RHD when i last had to go back about 6months ago.

Anyhow i think we are going a bit off topic here

The best thing it to fit a non standard i.e. home made immobiliser and maybe a mechanical gear shift lock to hold it in Park.

The way all commercial alarms/immobilisers are fitted is very poor, they usually only break one circuit and that's a 12v ignition feed.

There are better ways..;)

Might be worth fitting a home made tracker. Don't want to say too much but a PM to Spike might be a good idea..sort of Follow us..;)

Sorry to hear what happened.

Fingers crossed they've been sufficiently spooked to stay away.

Small GPS loggers are now available as well for peanuts - might be worth looking into one of those, so that if it is receovered, the last xxx hours/days of travel is recorded and can be downloaded......?

Sorry to hear about your attempted theft - glad they didn't get it. You may have had a heap of other cars on the drive that night, but the SEC was the most desirable. :-)

I completely agree with this,

I have never met Nav before, but Im sure if I did some searches on this forums and perhaps others?! I could dig up alot of information about your car(s) eg where they are serviced, from you pictures you have posted a good detail of info reguarding your street etc where your from etc, (same with all of us TBH!)

As mentioned before, this has defo been to order. Wasnt it on show at the ACE cafe meet for example? all you need is some priing eyes to notice it at such a place or location.

No point in trying to trace the origins of who is responsible, Im just glad its still yours and not how in the hands of the thiefing scum.

Err dunno about that, my thatcham one alarm would be difficult to get around in the middle of the night... i watched it being installed so i know exactly what i need to do incase the immobiliser ever gets stuck (happened on my yellow one after a accidentally shorted the battery)...
it took my fitter 10 hours to fit my system and half the car was stripped!
There is no way anyone would drive away in my car without the keys, they could only trailer it...

like i said if they want it bad enough.....

edit... the tracking system that spike has would be worth investing in (well he had it years ago, may not still)... nav - if you find out more could you let us know as it may be a worthwhile investment...

More likely saw it out for a drive or have seen it before, just follow it home then.
These B------s deserve both barrels, where i work the gipsy's have taken over the car park, and are just blatently smashing car windows in broad daylight, police are not bothered one bit.
It may be a case of Mob rule if they carry on ?

they are probably waiting for someone who can afford a big fine to step in and do something, then they will be bothered

Sorry to hear about the crime - drives us mad around here - the former car crime capital of the UK.

I'd heartily recommend products from here (and yes I do some work for them) - gates or bollards won't stop people getting in but they'll have to make a lot of noise to get your car off the drive.

Nav sorry to hear of your trouble, glad you frightened them off.
