B Class Automatic Transmission

Car
Mercedes B150 automatic
I have a B Class Merc 09 reg (just over 3.5 years old) with 36000 miles on the clock and MB FSH.
Recently it has developed a continuous whirring noise from the engine compartment.
Took it to my local MB dealer who thinks it may be emanating from the gearbox. Approx cost for replacement £4000
MB want £336 to investigate the matter further and if found faulty, they can approach MB HQ to see if they will contribute to the cost.

I am of the opinion that the gearbox should last more than 3.5 years with 36000 miles on the clock.

Has anybody come across this sort of situation?
What is the best way forward for me?
Does anyone know of an independent engineer who would examine the issue and give me a report.

Any help appreciated

Hi does it do it only when in gear and in motion? Could be a number of things! If when in motion it could be rubber doughnut on drive shaft if your car has one. Have you had gearbox levels checked? If its an auto. Maybe best getting it plugged into a star at an Indy to see if that throws any light on it before guessing. Sorry can't be much help but sure someone like olly will advise you soon when he's had a browse. Carl.

Have I done something wrong?

I think posts some times get missed for no real reason. Also, out of those viewings, it is likely a lot of those people (of which I was one) couldn't think of what to suggest next when I first read it...

On re-reading, and given your location, I would get your car over to Wright Tech in Sidcup for a diagnosis.

It could be something quite straight forward.

I think you have a CVT on that car, rather than a regular slush, which is a completely different gearbox.

Check the power steering level, even a little below the correct level caused my eclass w211 to whirr at certain times.
Do not spend anything till you have checked this.
Cheers wadeyblue
PS Be interested to know how you get on as my wife has a B class 2010

Obviously meant the power steering fluid level.

Thanks to all who have replied.

MY MB dealer says it is a tranmission issue
I am thinking of paying the £336 and getting them to detail the issue and hope MB will contribute to cost of the repairs.

My other option is to take them to the small claims court citing the gearbox is not of merchantable quality nor fit for the purpose intended.

Anyone taken MB to court?

This is a CVT transmission i think that is in your B Class the transmission has a primary & secondary unit with bearings on eather end of them & if your problem is when the car is moving & making a noise then i think one of the bearings has failed you could try the good will from mercedes or take the car to a recommended automatic transmission specialist

Thanks for all replies.
Am planning to take MB to the small claims court.
Will cost me around £100 and worth a try under the sale of goods act.

The automatic gearbox is a major component and in my view should last more than 3.5 years and 36000 miles especially with a MB FSH.

A member here took mb to court over a rust issue and mb settled the claim before it went to court will post a link later.

You would probably need to get it stripped & investigated first so that you know exactly what the problem is.
To make sure it's definatly internal to the gearbox , not sure on the wording but when I worked in the dealers most were not equipped to strip auto transmissions as the wouldn't buy the tools required and mercedes used to want the boxes back unstripped so they could investigate themselves.

From what I have read on here man people have taken MB to court. Some successfully and some that have caused years upon years of grief.

One thing I would advise is that you get a second opinion. MB dealers have misdiagnosed over £500 of repairs over the last year with me. A poky little indi garage managed to find the faults better and charged me £25/hour.

Slightly off topic but is there anyone on here that has a B class that hasnt gone wrong?

I think they are brilliant too, when it work. I had many problems earlier on but its been troublish free for the last 4 months, although the left wing mirror indicator sometimes decides not to work now.

Having written a couple of letter to my dealer, threatening to take them to court, I had a call from them to go and see them. I will do so and let everyone know.

I've got a B180 CDi with auto transmission, now covered 64000miles of which I have done half of them and, touch wood, no problems other than a cracked wheel, which I cannot blame MB for:D

Im not too jealous...much.

Mine has been pretty good for a while now and Im starting to really like it. Its getting serviced by Mercedes this weekend and then its being remapped the weekend after...I hope Im not taking one step too far but Ive been assured it shouldnt make any difference to reliability. Certainly the engine seems strong enough and Ive not heard any problems about the manual 6 speed so hears hoping.
