B Class Owners ..... Your Thoughts

B-Class suspension differences

I am considering a B-Class and interested in the maximum comfort. Is there a big difference between the Sport and SE suspensions?

Thanks

As discussed above suspension stiffness, ride quality and handling are all subjective. Best to drive both and make up your own mind

I can confirm that the suspension on the sport is really harsh (we owned a 62 plate B180d Sport for 4 years). But IMO it was worth putting up with for the much nicer spec as opposed to the SE

ANT.

I always thought that the B180 was a 1.5ltr diesel engine built by Renault? This is why I have always stopped 'er indoors from buying one........ If you buy a Mercedes, you at least want it to come with a Mercedes built engine.........

From Auto Express magazine:

In overall performance terms, the sweet spot is the 2.1-litre four-cylinder B200 CDI diesel, with 134bhp and a helpful 300Nm of torque. It’s also a Mercedes-built engine, whereas the B180 CDI is actually a 1.5-litre unit borrowed from Renault-Nissan. Perhaps that’s unimportant, but it may matter to some.

Ok. Thanks. Will try them out. Accepting that it is subjective, some reviews say thagt the B-Class, any model, is not a very comfortable ride. Jittery is one description from What Car.

Any one agree with this?

Thanks

I guess it will be compared to your E Class. However, we enjoyed our B180d Sport for 4 years.

We have a B180cdi Sport DCT & yeah, they are fairly solid for the small family car that it is, butby no means harsh or uncomfortable. I can imagine older clientele not enjoying the ride though. I find our car far from economical, though 50 mpg is doable if driving like a saint

Its important to note that the latest sport models don't have the 18 inch wheels as standard but 17 inch as did the 2012 models so the set up is probably softer as well. The line up is now SE. Sport and AMG Sport. The Amg spec now has 18inch wheels and sports suspension.

That's not right anymore. The Sport and the SE both have the comfort suspension in the facelift model. Only the AMG line has the lowered harder suspension.

I'd personally avoid the SE in the facelift model, as it's very basic. You get a lot more kit in the Sport for a small amount more

I am still driving a 12 plate B200 sport after 4 years and, although the ride is firm, I don't find it too harsh on my 70 mile round trip commute. That's from a 71 year old. :D. We also currently have C and E classes in the family, so I am able to put the ride into context. :thumb:

We have an 07 plate B180 SE. We chose the SE because we live in rural England and our roads are potholed and undulating. My CLS has the sport suspension which is quite harsh on our country roads. I've driven a CLS SE and that is very smooth indeed on our rutted roads.

Actually, thinking about it, if our government spent our money wisely and kept our roads in a decent state of repair, then it would make no different whether we had the SE or Sport/AMG Line.

If the government spent our money wisely and kept the promises they made we would be living in Utopia.
Unfortunately, they don't so we don't.

Or maybe if we gave them more money?

Just to reiterate, the B180 is a Renault/Nissan 1.5 Diesel engine giving 103bhp, where as the B200 is the Mercedes engined B class that gives 138bhp.........

Ok.. reading all this is heplful. Narrowing down to the Sport level, ruled out the 180D.

My question now is about the difference between the B200D Sport and the B180 Sport (that is the petrol version). In both cases I would add the Executive pack which gives Sat Nav.

Can anyone give the benefit of their knowledge on the engine choice (B200D vs B180 petrol).

Thanks

On a new car yes, but when the model was introduced in 2012? the 180cdi was a 1.8 as was the 200cdi. Later an eco version was introduced which was 1.5 and from around 2014 the 1.5 unit was standard for the 180 cdi, and the 200 cdi was changed to the 2134 unit.

You'll know the 1.5, if you cold-start it, they are rattly until warm. The older Merc engine is nice and quiet. Ours is late 2013 and has the 1.8 engine. I think they changed soon after

I'd go for a B200 petrol. It's just a slightly higher output version of the 180 and is compatible on price with the B200d. Much more refined and quicker too
