I have pondered many times over the years how it could be that the USA can produce (alright, design) fantastic products such as those from Apple and the computer industry in general and yet on the other hand build inferior products such as their cars, which are woefully poor even compared with the efforts of some far east manufacturers.
When I lived in the States, I had a succession of appallingly bad cars that shocked me in their poor build quality, materials and even design - just look at the switch gear in any USA-made car, you would only see something like that from a European manufacturer in a poverty-spec van.
The most bizarre thing is that the USA isn't even a closed market so the citizens are perfectly able to go to a VW, BMW or MB showroom and see how well things can be made before trotting off to the Chrysler forecourt and buying some heinous piece of junk.
I know that their domestically made cars are much cheaper than the imports but surely someone in Detroit worked out that, if they just made one decent car, there was a global market just waiting for them out there; but it would appear not. Really Detroit's decline can only be recognised as inevitable.
