I called to my trusted motor factors to get the battery checked and he said he couldn't justify a new battery until I sorted what he thinks is a starter related issue.
So I have a new starter which I will have my indie install after he has done the relevant checks, possible loose connections etc.

So I now have a new starter installed. No more blown starter fuses. It starts directly and consistently without variations in the number of turns before she fires up. I can trust again.
