Bad experience on a HID conversion kit

Bought a Tech One kit for £100++ from a member in this forum 2 weeks ago, just found out it doesn't work with my W211 when I tried to fit it last weekend.

With helps from an auto electrician guy we started from the left dipped beam. After we fit the ballast & HID bulb (I then realised that I don't have the bulbs holder to lock the HID bulbs back into the housing:mad:), we ran into a problem immediately. The bulb will only light on for less than a second (no matter how many times we try to switch on/off...

), the warning message appeared in my W211 cluster display as well.

Seller told me that this kit should serve me right as long as the bulb is H7 type. A lesson I learnt, I think this kit just doesn't work with the smarter (may be not?) ECU on a newer car.

Anyone interested to take it over as a bargain of the year (shoot me your offer)? Or I might just bin it since I'm not bother to spend like another £20++ to get the bulbs holder for my W211 + connect some kind of resistors in order to fool the ECU.

In fact, it should be plug & play, isn't it?

I might be getting HIDS4U Ultimate kit or GT-HID kit later next week, any verdict about these HID conversion?

Cheers

The problem is not with your kit. You have to use star diagnostis and chamge the settings to xenon present.

Xenons don't require as much current as normal lights so the computer thinks there is a fault.

5 minutes on a Star and its sorted. Its the same procedure if you retrofit original MB xenons.

The lights should still come on, just with a fault in the cluster. These don't stay on at all. Star won't fix that.

Have you actually tried it on a Star machine ?

Don't think you can discount it until the Star has changed the cluster to ' Xenons Present '

Its an easy change, a dealer will charge you 1/2 an hours labour ....

Good luck

As KLP stated you need to have the car programmed. IIRC the lights won't stay on unless you get the car set to XENON=PRESENT using STAR.

Any Mercedes main dealership ...

Just ask them to plug it in ...

Btw, is that mean I need to re-programmed my car in the future if I wish to switch back to Halogen bulbs then? ie. when I try to sell my car?

No - you can leave the settings VIA star to XENON = PRESENT and still run the standard halogen lights as normal!

Great. I just tested them by connecting the ballast to battery directly & the light is on with a brilliant icy cool white/blueish color (6000k)~ :)

Will get the STAR thingy sort out this Fri ;)

I just love this forum

Its easier to plug the lights in, switch the car ignition on, don't start it though and switch the lights on. They'll work fine.

After you start the car 2 secs later the lights switch off and will flicker at intervals.

*sigh* I need to get off my **** and refit the HIDS4U conversion kit to my SLK. I originally bought it for my BMW but removed it when I part ex'd it for this car.

it's either been bad weather, or I've been busy (or too lazy) to do it yet.

I don't understand the 2nd paragraph...

Some people just connect useful 4W under bonnet inspection lights to increase the wattage.
Works for BMWs.

I need to get some H7 bulb holders/clips for my W211.

I know HIDS4U got them for £15 each, any other dealers out there carry them?

With the W211 power will be cut to the bulb completely when the warning is shown. I had the same problem trying to fit LED sidelights.

Donnynsc give Staithes Garage in Dunston a ring - theyre a Merc indie with all the star gear etc.

He'll probably tell you over the phone whether he will give it go.

They are
Staithes Garage, Staithes road , Dunston.

I'm going to the MB main dealer in Newcastle on Fri to find out if they have 'just' a driver side mirror cover (not the entire mirror cover, just the black soft plastic cover which used to protect the cables within when the mirror folded away) instead of paying £180+VAT for the entire housing.

John from MB Newcastle sounds very helpful this morning, he told me that he might be able to do the STAR thingy for free if it won't take too long, but the appoinment will be next week. Can't get my HID converted this weekend again.
