Bad experience today

Neither of my bikes benefits from two-finger brakes, particularly 'The Brick' (BMW) which despite having ABS is a bit of a heavy behemoth to stop, so I ride accordingly.

I don't like brakes that sharp, Brembos on the MHR back in the day were frightening, saw three MHR's written off because other bikes went into the back of them, swapped out for a 900ss and then a 900 darmah, then a shovel.

A *good* car will out-corner a bike, but at everything else it is no contest, manoeuvres that would be suicidal in a car (think bhp/lb) are just slightly crazy/hairy in a bike.
Surely the bike will be outbraked by any reasonable car?

Just think 4 reasonably sized contact patches against (effectively) 1 very small one.

Depends very much on the rider / driver, tyre compounds, bike / car model, and conditions.

contact area doesn't really have much to do with it.

basically you've opened one of those tin of worms questions, read this entire thread if interested.

I have read the entire thread but I'm no wiser.

However, this thread is not the place for this discussion, methinks.

I wanted to know mainly because when I hear about people putting on different rims (than standard) the main concern with offset seems to be will they fit without touching on anything else. There does not seem to be the same concern for the fact that the offset also determines the load characteristic on the stub axel, and I would imagine the ball joint, as an incorrect offset will set up an extra moment that needs to be countered. I have been wondering for years if this would have any real effect on other suspension components and possibly cause them to fail after time. I know nobody can really answer this without doing an experiment over many miles / years, so when I read of this failure I wondered if it could shed some light on this possible failure mechanism. Knowing if things were absolutely standard or modified in any way would be handy.

Everything on the car is totally standard as far as I know.

I've had broken springs picked up at MOT time without being aware beforehand - car still looked level and no clunks or clonks .

These days it is something I check for before MOT or whenever I happen to be under the car .

thats how my springs where found, my local Waterhouse guy came out when i turned up and said "did you know that your front springs had 1 1/2 coils snapped off" my jaw droped 1. thinking that could of been dangerous and 2. now thinking i have to lower it

So I went and picked the old girl up yesterday from my mates garage, with original parts the bill was £287.80.
It has had 2 new bottom ball joints (1 either side) and a pair of coil springs.
Drives like brand new again now, well happy.
Gave her a wash, T Cut and polish and she is looking beautiful again.
All's well that ends well gents.
