Hey guys,

Last year when I first got my CLK, I had to have both of the engine mounts replaced, however, the gearbox mount was not.

What would the symptoms be if my gearbox mount was shot?

Also, is it normal for the front of the car to twitch slightly when the engine is fired up?

Thanks,
G

You would feel a vibration through the car.

Would it feel like a rough idle? And also, could it cause any creaking / squeaking noises?

I have never heard one creak or squeek. Engine or gearbox mounts won't make the car feel rough at idle. A problem with the engine will make the engine rough.

Sagging mounts cause a vibration through the body of the car. Normally worse in "D" and when they are really bad they make the engine move about under acceleration when it twists.

The creaking noises on 208's normally come from suspension components such as the rear outer trunion bush

Mmm, reckon mine might need attention ... :o

With that heavy oil burner up front they tend to last about 100-120k. They need doing on the 43.... Another thing to add to the list.

 What are we looking at here ££?

Each engine mount is £71 I think and the gearbox one is £30 ish from memory.

£180 + labour + VAT ... I'll give you a call ....

Labour is bugger all as they are a doddle on your car. 1 hour max

So bearing in mind I had the engine mounts done last year, would a shot gearbox mount cause the vibration by itself?

What causes the front of the car to twitch when I fire it up? Gearbox mount also?

Cheers
G

Yes, a worn gearbox mount will cause a vibration underneath due to the 'box sagging and engine noise being transmitted in to the cabin. It should have been done when the engine mounts were done for a proper job.

Can you elaborate on the twitch? I don't quite understand what you mean.

I have the same , there is a little 'twist' anticlockwise as the engine fires...

I've always put it down to the torque.

As it first fires from cold, it starts at over 1k RPM for the first few seconds (1300, 1400 or something?)

I'm guessing tpw and Howard are noticing the slight twisting effect you get as the engine is revved, whether that be the engine twisting on it's mounts or even the front of the car slightly moving I guess it can be felt?

Had some old-school V8s in the past, SD1 Vitesse and a few RR Classics - they used to twitch a lot when revved by comparison, the Rangie bonnet would dip an inch or two at a time from memory :D

But if there is a vibration, surely has to be bad mount(s) and/or a slight misfire perhaps, I know that some M113s suffer from slightly lumpy idles?

Hi Olly, the twitch is just how Howard describes. The engine "twists" slightly when first cranked.

Attn Olly, please.

I know this is an old post, but I have very subtle vibration through my C270 including at idle and there doesn't seem to be an particular movement in the engine mounts.

I don't know the relative positions of these things, but it did have a weep from the pilot bush and I wondered if that might have softened the gearbox mount?

I doubt it would have done.

The engine monts dont have to move to be worn. They are fluid filled. The fluid leaks out and they sink. Hence the vibration.

yes sometimes feel like crack .like is touching the iron .
