Some idiots in a black L-reg celica-GT4 just drove straight into the back of me at a junction then drove off!

I'm ok, my sister who was a passenger seems to be ok and the rear bumper doesn't look too bad. I'm absolutely furious right now though because they just didn't stop to apologise or anything, and they nearly caused another accident immediately after by driving through the still-red lights. I'm just glad I had my foot on the brake and I wasn't pushed into the car in front, I stopped a couple of inches away!

Managed to get most of the licence plate though and the police have got all the details, with any luck they might track 'em down.

Will check the car out in the daylight tomorrow. I'll be upset if there is any real damage, looks like scuffs (knocked the dirt off  ) but there may be cracks or inner damage to it.

GRR!

Sorry to hear that mate. Hope they get caught and done for it. This sort of thing makes me really mad

GT4's are getting quite rare these days. With any luck you might see the same car around some time. I know what I'd do to them.

How much of the number plate did you get?

That's what I'm counting on, those GT4s are pretty rare and I reckon it's a local car.

L??? THF

A really kind bloke stopped and gave me the licence plate details that he had, the celica pulled out from behind me and was gone before I had chance to see it myself!

Nooooo :(

Sorry to hear that Nick :( At least you and your sister are okay. Sheesh if they drove off in such a hurry to you think the Celica was hot? What speed were they doing when they hit you?

Hope you/police catch the b@r$t@rds  Lets hope there's not too much damage.

Yeah well that's the most important thing! My sister is a bit upset about it but I'm pretty calm now, still kinda annoyed though.

Either they were drunk, or the car was stolen, or they realised they'd driven into a mercedes and didn't fancy buying me a new bumper etc. I really hope it wasn't stolen because I think I can pretty much wave goodbye to any possible insurance claims against them.

Prolly wasn't that fast, I was still braking for the junction and they were braking hard so it was basically a hefty nudge, the car surged forward and my sister and I were thrown forward in our seats.

I'm hoping with the plate details and the fact that the car's not that common (a friend of mine says he sees the same GT4 matching that description in Bury all the time so there is a VERY good chance that it's a local car!). Like I said the damage doesn't *look* that bad right now, but I can't tell because it's night etc.

Aaaaarghhhhh !! What's the matter with people ??!!

Glad u r OK, hope they get tracked down, and hope the damage is not too severe. Same happened to me on the M25 a few years ago ... rear ended in slow traffic - so there was nowhere for them to escape to. Very nasty threatening people though, so I called the police. Turned out the driver had been refused residency twice, had no tax, no insurance , and probably no licence, so there wasn't much recourse to claim for damage.

I never bothered getting it repaired , and traded it for the MB a few months later, which thankfully remained bump free !

hope they're found and charged!!

Glad you're OK, I'm sure your sister will be OK too - just shaken I guess. There are some real gits around

Providing the witness and yourself??? Have got the details of the registration number correct it will be very easy for the Police to locate it.

I would thoroughly recommend that you treat ANY slight injury either you or your passenger received VERY seriously. The slightest pain should be reported to at least your doctor.

Is 'HF' a local registration? L??? THF. I ask this because registration numbers are given out in blocks and the supplying Toyota dealer will have a rcord of all his 'L' reg vehicles sold within the 'THF' range.

The other alternative is to play with the RAC software to locate the few Celica-GT4's that would have that number and then pay the DVLC to obtain the details.

These last comments are purely a 'back stop' because the Police should locate this car quite easily.

Regards,
John

Same thing has happened to me twice this year.
First time in the S500 a Saxo bumped me at a junction he shot off the wrong way down a one way street I didn't get any details of the car.
Second time a Corsa tried to get through a gap that wasn't big enough and damaged the back of the van. He stopped at the traffic lights which was rhd turn only into Tesco I pulled up behind him the lights change and he went staight on I follow.
Three times round the same rounderbout, he gets stopped by traffic at some lights I block the road Starsky and Hutch style. I got out and the eighteen year old was crapping himself, he was giving me his car keys and begging me not to wipe the floor with him. He was lucky its a works van and its not worth getting arrested over a Peugeot Expert van. Had it been one of my cars well who knows.

I never thought a 1.9 non turbo expert van could catch anything, they struggle to maintain 70mph on the motorway

Sorry about your bump Shude, glad you are both OK and no major damage done.

To locate car then --- HF was Liverpool.

Hi Brian,
What an excellent site (another for 'My Favourites') Unfortunately it doesn't state whether 'THF' was issued with an 'L' suffix, but again I must stress the Police SHOULD carry out all this groundwork.

To me it would be a challenge, and I must confess a way of taking out my anger at this idiot's actions

Regards,
John

shude , sorry to hear about your brush with the low lifes.

glojo, i am sure all celica gt4,s are gey imports so checking at the dealers may not help (a good idea though)
i have locked the clk away in the garage for the winter after the local council turned the roads white with grit last night !

Drat!!! In that case it will just be an individual number randomly issued within the specified range :(

Thanks for the input regarding grey imports.

GRIT!!!!! We have just turned the central heating on, but GRIT on the roads in November, by the cringe it must be COLD where you are??

Good luck with the Police Shude and please keep us updated

CLKBOY, I think the majority of GT4's were grey imports but not all of them. The UK supplied ones were worth quite a lot more and can be found - They are the ones without the square number plates. I recently sold one on behalf of a friend of mine:

UK Spec GT4

So there is hope I suppose. Shude I don't suppose you remember if the car had square plates?

I was trying to do some detective work earlier and searching for random combinations of Lxxx THF using 101, 201, 301, etc because as John said earlier the numbers are assigned to dealers in blocks and I only found Renault, Nissan, and Fords.

I was using the AA Car Data Check site.

Maybe the driver of the GT4 bought the plate as a Select Registration from the DVLA, i.e, L1-20, L111, 222, etc. At the end of the day the probability is only 999 so the chances of the Police finding a GT4 in their search on the PNC is quite high I think.

Shude we're all up for helping out. Hopefully these thugs will get caught and charged.

A friend of mine used to live next door to a place that sold imported cars and they all had the same letters on the plates, it turns out they bought a range of plates to use for imported cars. It is very possible that the car came from Japan Direct in Bury which is literally around the corner from where the RTA happened.

All my mates are on the lookout for the car now as well, if someone spots a car with the same details and it completes the missing parts of the plate then I'll just tell the police I had a revelation and I can remember the whole thing. Some of my friends live or work in Bury and the guy with the GT4 can't hide the car forever :)

Good luck Shude with getting everything sorted out mate - like you said "you can run but you cannot hide...". I personally try to avoid getting invovled in altercations with people but your situation is different.

Last XMAS some idiot had road rage with me (not physical) but verbal... I did not respond and as he overtook me dangerously he looked right into my car and at my face and waved his fist to make out that he meant buisness. The next day I was droping a friend mine off and after I left her house I happen to see this very same car and the first letter of the reg and last 3 letters were the same - this WAS the same car that had done road rage with me parked inside the owners drive. Just then the owner happened to come out of his front door and noticed me parked o/side his house - you should have seen the look on his face (it looked like he had seen a ghost.. ) and he recognised me OK and went straight back into his house and strated lookign out of his upstairs window with his other half. I did not mean anything by it and casually drove off as normal. Sounds like to me Shude you have very good chances of locating this car as it is local and ur mates are with you on this one.. ;)

One of my mates knows some people in Bury that are into the import-scene (subarus/mitsubishis/toyotas etc) and I reckon a car like that will probably attract their attention anyway, prolly quite easy to spot. Wonder how long it will take before someone finds it :)

I'm not out for revenge or anything, I'm the world's scrawniest guy and I'd not last 5 seconds in a fight with anyone but I'd like to know the guy's details so I can let the police and my car insurers take care of him :)

;) Well said Shude, and it makes no difference about your 'build' Let the Police do their job (hopefully) It is an interesting challenge to locate the vehicle yourself but as you rightly said, 'Let the Police deal with it'

The driver has a legal obligation to contact the Police if they are unable to exchange details, so they have broken a number of laws.

Make sure in your statement that you explain how there is absolutely no doubt in your mind whatsoever that the driver must have known they hit your car. Then give the reason why you are so sure!!

Good luck again,
John

How about a little help from your friends on here! :)

As Glojo has already said, the police should be doing the groundwork, but the chances are that they are "too busy" or don't have the time to pursue it.

Anyway, L ??? THF is a valid registration, and has an absolute maximum amount of combinations of 1000?, probably much less?

Celica GT4s are rare, and it is unlikely that you will find many (if more than 1), AND in black!

I have an RAC log in, as I am sure many other people on here do, so why not split the search up. If we searched 50 combinations each, then it would only take a few minutes, and we only need 20 people to check the lot!

Any possible matches could be either posted on here, or PM'd to Shude.

I certainly don't mind spending 5 minutes of my time for somebody here who has spent so much of their own time helping other people with their cars!

Anyway, if people think this is a good idea, and want to help, how about a list?

Copy and paste, then add your details to the bottom:

Will - search: L000 THF - L050 THF
