Now that this is an MOT item since the beginning of the year, my 1983 230E has failed only on the covers being damaged ..DOH! Fair enough, but, although Mercedes do a repair kit, I can't find one in the UK. I could buy the ball joints and swop rubbers but that seems an expensive option. I see kits are on ebay for £3 but I need bore sizes - anyone got one handy to measure, or anyone know where to get the kit ?
Thanks

Would it not be better to replace the ball joint? You would need to get the spanners out to fit a replacement dust cover anyway.

Yes, but the joints are OK and need the arm off and a press to get the balljoint out etc etc. The cover is much easier. My local man only has a couple of free hours next week otherwise I would take your good advice - I guess I could keep the joints for a later replacement though.

I have never seen just the cover for sale, you may have to buy 2 cheap pattern ball joints and borrow the covers.

Hi
don't think EPC lists them separately unfortunately... unless you can come up with some kind of boot to go over the boot as it were?

cheers

ps be glad you don't have to replace the whole LCA not just the ball-joint...

Damaged covers [ barring direct violence] are an indication that the ball joints are "getting on a bit" so I would be inclined to replace the complete unit as a matter of course- provided you can source them of course.

Just give a mercedes dealer your chassis number and they will get you the right covers. Changing the actual balljoint will double the labour so if there is no play in them I don't see the point in the added expense.
This new MOT law will prove to be a real PIA for alot of people!

A decent local motor factors will sell ball-joint boots.

Thanks to all replies. Apparently MB do a kit but to order from Germany.
My man says he has a universal kit so is happy to do that.
I would prefer a 'proper' boot so will check out all these suggestions.
Many thanks.
