"Battery Protection, Convenience Functions Temporarily unavailable"

This came up on the instrument panel this morning, then after driving for 5 minutes it flagged up "Please be aware Convenience Functions now available". I'm guessing this is because I had the car running an air pump for 30 mins without the engine running and I have drained the battery?

This is not so unusual. Best advice is to put the battery on overnight charge from a good battery charger - trickle charge will be fine. The warning comes on when the voltage drops below 11.75v. Also in these cold mornings the battery is not so efficient as when it's warm. MB tell me that new cars have had the warning taken away. The car still denys you the functions but now just doesn't tell you. I charge my battery about every few weeks to keep it at peak condition. Also, I've found that if your car has lots of functions it's worth letting it run for 2 or 3 minutes before turning it off or preferably drive it. This allows the car to fully wake up. If you start it and stop it straight away, some of the wake up circuits are still trying to come up and when you turn the car off it doesn't go to sleep properly which can affect the battery. Hope this helps.

cheers, the trouble is the car doesn't get driven often, so I need to be careful or one day I won't be able to start it.

Thats what happened to me  Kind of embarrassing when I called out the Mobilo chap and he said the battery needs charging ! My S320 wont start if the voltage drops below 11.5 volts, althought the lights all work etc. The engine wont crank over at all unlike some other cars.
I turned the key and nothing!

ps

you can check the voltage by holding in the REST climate control button for 5 secs , then flick through the options 1-100 and you will see the voltage readout

That sounds odd, I don't know if the W220 has one battery but the W221 does start even if the main battery was completely flat, like doors would not open with the key, no lights etc. The point being that it has a separate starter battery, if consumers make the main battery go flat when the car is parked for several weeks or moths, the car would still start with the starter battery.

I keep my SL on a maintenance charger, for that reason:
