Best engine in a W210?

I currently own a W210 E200 estate manual and unfortunatly it was involved in a accident (not my fault) and I have a feeling that the insurance company are going to write it off. This may not be a bad thing for me as its quite rusty in all the usual 210 places and the paint is in very poor shape, and its not the best colour for me!!

If they do write it off, I want to replace it with another 210 as I have fallen in love with the brand having never owned such a nice car.

My problem is what model/engine size to go for? I would like better fuel consumption than I currently get from the 2.0l (average around 25mpg) and I would like something a little quicker if I'm honest. I have looked at the autotrader specs for different engines but I find real life experiance is the best you can get!

Not really fussed if its petrol or diesel, and would prefer a manual but appreciate that I will prob end up with a auto.

Also, is there any books/websites that list the standard and optional specs for W210's as the spec really varies from car to car.

Don't touch LPG - either pay the fuel bills for a big petrol.....or as others say, the 320CDi!!

Whoops missed that bit of the OP, easy answer no, best blend of performance economy is indeed the CDi 320

320 cdi, no question, although having said that, if yuo're used to an e200 then a 220cdi may work for you

Get hold of Aandyy on this forum. He has a great 210 Diesel, I think its a 300 Turbo Diesel. OK, so he runs it on WVO but it sure can shift and its very quiet.
It is one of the nicest 210's I have seen or been in. Have a look for his album on here. it will give you some idea of what it is really like.

The E300TD is a fine old beast ... We have two of them.
You can pick them up very cheaply.
BUT
There are increasing issues with corrosion.
Go for the 320 CDi

Another vote for the 320CDI I average over 30MPG on 10 mile return journeys well over 40 on long runs.
Quick relaxed smooth best thing about the car.

Thanks for the replies guys! Looks like a 320CDI is the one to go for then! Are there any good sites where I can find info on the engine/model such as what year they came in, different specs etc.

From looking whats for sale on Autotrader I can only see the 320cdi in the facelift models (2000+)

Also, after speaking to a friend in work he suggested the 270CDI but I have not seen any of these in the W210 shape, did they put that engine in the 210?

AFAIK they put the 270 5 cyl in the 211 and 203 models
