Best engine in a W210?

55  or 320CDI :)

The AMG 55 anyday, people who say 320 cdi.. have you owned a w210 e55? if not then your missing out, its an amazing engine which to this day still compares to allot of the high perfomance family cars like the rs4,s5, even the new m3's!

and they still use it in the slk55 and used on the c55 and clk55's

great power and great engine noise - the only thing the 320 cdi has over the 55 is the mpg but when you buy an AMG the mpg goes out of the window!

320 CDi is a great engine for a day to day going to work and back but when you want something exciting which will put a smile on your face then the 55 anyday..

But the OP is looking for something that doesn't drink fuel!!

True, the 55 has a drinking problem :)

320CDI is the best all rounder, and will feel like a AMG55 after an E200 :)

I have a track day mini (1972) with a 2.0l 16v Vauxhall engine on throttle bodies for my weekend toy and fix for speed! I just want another E class with a bit better fuel consumption for everyday use.

I mainly do short journies (around 10 miles) but now and then I do go on a long journey and want better than 25mpg that I get from my E200.

It looks like a 320cdi is what I need, but at a push a 220cdi would fit the bill.

I wouldn't dismiss a 220 out of hand, they don't have a great deal of shove it's true and the engine does feel a bit lumpy at idle and low revs but cruising around or at a steady 70/80 on a run they are just as nice as the bigger engined cars. Mine returns up to mid 50's on longer journeys and as much as I would love an e55 I just couldn't justify the fuel bills. Having driven a friend's 320 I would agree that it's a cracking motor and if I'd bought one of them instead of a 220 I'd be urging you to buy one the same as everyone else :p

Personally I'd not want to drive a non-AMG'd car that had the 5.5 V8 engine 'gently inserted' into it. The rest of the car would not be up to the job.

Sometimes a small engine in a big car is a false economy. The 320 V6 petrol returns good mpg with, shall we say "adequate" performance. On my regular commute to and fro to work, I'm getting ~30mpg.

Some interesting numbers
Mercedes-Benz Specification Site W210 E Class - Marcus Fitzhugh
but note US specs not ours (esp ride-height/tyres) and left pond gallon is only 80% of one of ours. So city/hwy 20/27 becomes 25/34 mpg which imo is about right.

True, if I use the right foot then the mpg goes down. But you cannot use full throttle for very long, seconds usually, then you run out of road. Motorway at NSL is a fast idle, uses little fuel.

The thing with fuel economy is down to displacement per mile, not engine size. Sometimes a small engine has to work too hard.

AMG spec bodied cars without the AMG engine do exist.
They look the same as ordinary cars until you try to get underneath and find: you can't, it's too low and everything is covered over with plates; the parts are different.

The HP difference between the E320 and the E430 is about the same ballpark as between the E320cdi and the E320 petrol. The CDI has more torque but the petrol job compensates by producing near-maximum torque from around 2000rpm, all the way to the top.

Off-topic question - did AMG actually produce a S210 Estate T-wagon ?

Don't touch LPG - either pay the fuel bills for a big petrol.....or as others say, the 320CDi!!

Why? I had an L322 Range Rover 4.4 V8 with an LPG system. It was fantastic! As long as it's a good quality multi-point system, I would recommend it! :thumb:

Why? Excellent fuel availability, low emissions: LPG is a superb fuel providing the conversion is carried out by someone competent.

Not to forget a nice discount on road tax! :thumb:

I also received a 15% reduction in my car insurance! :thumb::thumb:

E280 petrol.

Very rare, but I have one and a very good compromise. Fast enough to be enjoyable, yet 32mpg on the motorway. Not bad for a very heavy petrol car.

Failing that, I'm thinking the E320 diesel as I'm sure the E320 petrol likes to drink!

I can get around 34mpg out of the E320 petrol, and I've got a lead foot.

Acceleration is brisk but then you're back to dawdling along behind traffic.

Most of the time the motor is purring along at a fast idle ~1500rpm.
