Car
W204 C350 CDI AMG Sport
Bangernomic spec as above, manual, 4 door car with low tax bracket if possible.

Would like something moderately reliable.

It's for my mate Dave, not me :thumb:

Toyota Yaris, my sister bought a 10 year old one which still had the original exhaust on 97k, it's now on 170k and has never broken down.

Check the front of the sump for corrosion as they are unprotected and rot through, dead easy to change tho. You'll not find anything more reliable for under 1k

might do the same once my golf dies, but that's at 278K now (did get the Head Gasket done at 227K) so might be a few years yet!!! For the moment the golf will be a daily workhorse.

Renault Clio (mk 2) , ours has been uber reliable despite it being my daughter first car which has been abused rotten for two years and if that wasnt enough it became my sons first car after he passed his test a year ago so if anything can handle that punishment then it has my respect.

If rear space is a factor then there is not much rear room in the 107 / Aygo / C1 , the Clio is a bit more spacious as well as better equipped and better built as the 107 my daughter now has is a pretty poverty spec place to be. Having said that , group 1 ins , 60 mpg and £20 per year tax cant be argued with.

Thanks, rear seating space not an issue.

No more bottom fishing than the £0 I paid for a saab a year ago :D (for Dave I add..)

The Aygo is a relatively new model.

For under a grand, I would suggest going for something older which has seen less abuse and fewer miles.

Audi A2 if you can find a decent one

Saab 9-5. Even though its only a grand they are safe unlike most of the above.

Had our 2004 9-5 Aero Auto for 6 years now brought on 78K now 120K without issues. Only negative for me is the auto is slow and blunts performance so would have choosen a manual if I had the chance again.

Mercedes-Benz 190E :D

Why drive an unsafe piece of cr@p when you can drive a Mercedes ?

Like the Saab 95 suggestion, a W201 isn't what most people would think of as a "city car" (whatever that actually means).

And for under a grand, a 190E will be a piece of cr@p.
