I had both my number plate stolen last night outside my house! luckily there was no damage to the car ,just the plate plaque is broken.Police in my area have advised that this is a common crime at present, plates are used for congestion charge areas and speed camera's and parking tickets.I have got the agro of getting new plates made up today and my main concern is that I hope I dont starting getting ticket reminders etc in the post in the future.Has anyone else had their plates stolen recently??

Yes I had the plates glued onto a plaque by local MB to give it a clean look i.e no screws

When I fitted new plates to my car I basically destroyed the old ones trying to get them off (sticky tabs), let's hope the thieves had the same problem with yours!

If your sign on name is anything to go on they don't need the plates to "Clone" your number.

:) :) Nobody would know it was a ***** though! ;)

Excellent point and the details are there for everyone

Make
model
date of registration
colour
engine size etc
Last owner change

I was surprised it had four owners.

Please note I have not listed all the above details, but they are perhaps in your signature??

John

As long as you have reported it to the Police and have a Crime Ref. no. then all should be fine IF you start to get speeding tickets/parking fines etc. but nonetheless is still unnecessary aggravation writing letters to the relevant Agencies to clear yourself.

PS. We have quite a few members that have their number plate as their on line "nick names".

No but looking at it from their point of view, isn't it just easier to notice a same colour / make / model car and armed with a screwdriver and 5 minutes. Would they go to the hassle of making their own plates if they can nick someone else's?

there are alot of companies that attend car shows and mail order that ask for no proof when ordering plates!

Agree with shude, bad idea having your nick as your car plate! esp with all the car details under it!

That reply wasn't from me, doesn't stop it from being right though ;)

The other reason people steal plates , and for this purpose it matters not whether the make/model/colour matches their 'own' car , is to hide their own identity whilst carrying out some illegal activity - perhaps going in for a tankful of 'free' petrol :-

Stop round corner from filling station , pop on false plates with double sided tape or whatever over the top of your own ,

drive in , fill up ,

drive off without paying then asap rip off false plates and discard .

Repeat next time tank is low .

I've heard it is quite a common practice .

I was stopped a few weeks ago by the Leicester Constabulary by their ANPR van. Appears my car has been cloned and although mine is the original is somewhat annoying!! Just got back from a week holiday in Edinburgh where I was awoken on Friday morning at 7am by reception telling me that the Police wished to see me downstairs!! All the worst thoughts running through my head, member of family died or worse but all it was that Lothian & Borders plod were doing a sweep of the local area and of course my car was picked up again! If only they could catch the clone.....

this is something that doesnt just happen to prestige marques either.

I work with a guy who has a 206 on a '52 reg. his plates went. they were eventually found on a white 206, which was used in a "hole in the wall" robbery. the white 206 had been stolen from stockport. it was a 54 reg. with 2 new plates saying it was 52 reg, who would have noticed it parked near a bank eh?

I think they now make breakable plates to make removal of them a pain!

www.fancyplates.com and www.ezplates.co.uk will both do you plates without the hassle. if you want legal plates but cant be bothered with id checks. order a show plate, and when having it made it, choose legal standard background, legal font and off you go. a legal plate. easy when you know how!

My mercedes plate holder allowed me to takre the plates off really easy. i just too do that when the car was in the garage. always imagined a theif driving about in a car with no plates on.

i took the holders off, but i havent yet got round to putting them on this car.
