Billy's W124 Coupe Project

Just a couple of observations:

1. The coolant level is low, should be up to the container joint line.

2. It may be the picture but the cam contact and bearing areas look worn/rough/rusty

Hi Mate,

1. There isn't any coolant in there at the moment just water.

2. No doubt before it went in would have been checked through. Close up's tend to make things worse than they are..

Hi Mate,

2. No doubt before it went in would have been checked through. Close up's tend to make things worse than they are..

1. The engine now has proper mercedes green coolant at the correct level, I only use water for the test runs in case I need to drain to drain the system again.

2. Just a little dust from storage, checked and cleaned off before it was put together.

We are still in the process of finalising the correct springs. Currently we are trying a few options available. The Bilstein B8 shocks are working very well and its certainly money well spent for sure. A huge difference in damping while pottering around taking the dips and bumps on the road compared to previous. The springs used right now add a huge factor in this comparison mind you. I can turn the steering energetically and the car will very quickly dart in the direction I want it to go which I love! This all happens happens with very minimal body roll. At high speed however I felt the rear of the car given its now wider track with the 9j’s wasn’t up to the job entirely.

We feel the use of a softer spring at the rear is needed but close attention needs to be paid in order to compliment the workings of the front springs. The way I’d describe the current rear feeling at speed (100+) was a little ‘ skatey’ if that's a word. With a little more cushioning back there I think we are on to a winner. Normal driving is perfect – but I need best of both for times i may get leary!

Hey

Hopefully these will sort out your "best of both times issue)

we are going progressive on your rear..

Free length - 290mm

Progressive rates

5 mm to 20 mm displacement rate = 40.7 N/mm
20 mm to 35 mm displacement rate = 42.3 N/mm
35 mm to 50 mm displacement rate = 43.6 N/mm
50 mm to 65 mm displacement rate = 45.2 N/mm
65 mm to 80 mm displacement rate = 46.8 N/mm
80mm to 95 mm displacement rate = 48.5N/mm
95mm to 110 mm displacement rate = 63.1 N/mm
110 mm to125 mm displacement rate = 73.6 N/mm

At moment you are running 56N/mm linear spring. we should get the softness that you require and also the stiffness to balance VS front springs.

may need to get calculator out and increase percentages here and there.

Good thing your are not too picky with your stance and ride quality..hehehehe

the red spring is the actual spring you have fitted at the moment mate

Mono block alloys dropped off for refurb this morning,

Great service from Diamond Alloys once again - spent this morning going through lots of different shades of silver...didnt know so many existed?!

Were going for Mercedes Titanium Silver with diamond cut wheel dish.

When are the wheels coming back billy? Im keen to see some pics and are you sticking with 215 up front?

I might be pushed to do mine soon!

Got an email yesterday saying that they'll be hopefully done tomorrow :thumb:

Yes keeping the 215 up front and using a 235 @ the rear.

No alloys yet :(

..but these bad boys showed up today, all the way from a breakers yard, Alamo Texas! Been searching loooooong and hard for coupe speaker pockets in mushroom colour.

Damn were the inner's dusty/sandy as hell... good old Texas desert dust! Gave them a good clean tonight, they are in spanking condition.

Thanks Ed for pointing me in the right direction pal :thumb:

Love the speaker pockets billy.

Where can I get a set in black?!

MB have black pockets in stock from Germany (it appears that they only have the black colour left too)

Sit down....

£435 each!!!

Speaker pockets are hard to find especially for the coupe. The saloon/estate pockets are an easier find. They pop up on US ebay every now and again so i'd keep your eyes peeled... There was a really nice black set on US ebay a month back but was for saloon/estate.

Looks good Billy, do you need a separate amp for those or do they just plug into the stereo...??

At least they didn't charge you extra for the dusty little bit of America ;)

Looks like you ended up with a great deal based on the pic...:thumb:

The original MB upgrade system consisted of an amp i believe.

I'm going to have the door and rear speakers connected to a 5 channel amp (which gives me an extra channel should i want to wire up a sub in the future) Having four mid range speakers will give me enough sound.

6.5 inch in the doors with a little bit of mods to make fit and 5.5 inch in the rear. The two dash speakers will be connected up to my recently acquired Becker. The gains will be set to bare minimum on the Becker to give more tweet/higher frequencies from the dash. Everything else controlled by the amp.

Quite funny that, while i was rinsing out the cloth i used to clean them, i saw little bits of Texas being washed away in my sink!

Really happy with them - however needed to pay an extra customs charge at the post office!

I have the version for the estate in my w124, and you'll need a crossover and small subs for them as the location isn't great for the directional nature of mids/highs. Mine have infiniti subs in them which work really well with 2 way speakers in the dash and extra tweeters on the door mirror cheater panels.

Can't believe I've only just found this post - beautiful job, I'd have this in my million pound garage! Need new pics with the refurbed alloys though!

Thanks pal, the icing on the cake will be the all glass out spray job at the very end of this project.

...Still quite a bit to get through till then.

Simon finished the car in good stead ahead of the PCS gtg this weeeknd gone. Was really looking forward to driving down the A3 to Horndean. Sadly though i got a call on Friday afternoon saying that the wheels were not ready. The paint had reacted to the diamond cut lip on the edges so they are in the process of re dipping the wheels again and starting all over! :(

I'll get pics up when i get them back. These guys do a fantastic job and did cracking work diamond cutting the alloys on my w211.

Billy......just read this from start to finish and it is a fantastic job that has been done. I look forward to seeing the finished car and hopefully I can have a little spin in it....:thumb:

Careful as you might end up with the 124 bug again :D

Never really lost the 124 bug Dash......merely between cars right now:thumb:
