Washed and polised the car this week end and again it comes up with swirls when the car is in the sun. its sooo annoying when i have spent all day polishing the car then it looks probably worse because of the swirls till the sun dies down then it looks fantastic..

Sum1 in here must be having the same problems any solutiuons.. tried the zymol that most people recommended last time i asked the question didnt have much affect..

I used a very, very fine cutting compound called Faracella G10 Extra Fine, It is sort of like T-cut but better. You use this on a wet car with plenty of water as a lubricant. This is powerul stuff so you may want to get a bodyshop to do it for you.

I then applied Faracella Black Top hand glaze, again this is a proffesional's product, it seems to feed the paint and fill in the swirl marks almost completely. I finished this off with a protective coat of Diamondbrite. The result is that 90% of the light swirl marks are gone and only the really bad ones are visible but not as bad as they were.

Like you say they are more visble in certain lights, bright sun and artificial lighting are the worst.

Whenever you wash, polish or wax your car always use your mitt or cloth the way the wind would flow over the car, ie front to back in straight lines, never in a circular motion, this and car washes is what causes swirls.

If you can't get the proffesional products, Meguiars do a version called ScratchX, do not use T-cut, it is too abrasive.

Dealing with Swirl

I know the feeling, this has got to me so much I started serious research. Check out my thread on Power Polishing / buffing / waxing.

http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=6997

I ended up investing in some technology, this has cured 90% of my problem. However I am getting very fussy.

You will find the links to the Meguiars videos useful, There is a video clinic on swirl.

or

Also if you go to Meguiars UK site ( www.meguiars.co.uk) there is a free phone telephone number which I have used a couple of times. You can contact the UK team during the day or if you telephone between 5pm and 11pm you go through to Meguiars USA they have technical advisors who you can explain the problem to and they will give you advice. (This ofcourse involves a couple of their products!) Swirl seems to be Meguiars thing.

If you want more advice check out the discussions on www.autopia.org

Hope this helps.

For swirls you should usse a glaze rather than a wax.

Apparently most most car finishing problems are due to over application of the product.

Try adding the wax to some water in a bucket then apply to the whole car then go round again with no more wax and then again until you have a very smooth and fine layer of wax. When you buff off you shouldn't have swirls or the bloomed look you can get on black paint.

I inspected my brand new black Metro (cough.. OK it's not a MB  .. but this was 14 years ago, when I couldn't afford an MB)

and the paint was in excellent condition and the valet staff prepared it real nice, though I couldn't pick it up, as it had to be PDI'ed, and was to return first thing in the morning to pick it up.

Unfortunately during the night it rained, and must have left rain stains on the paintwork. As the valet staff didn't work saturdays (that early) the idiot salesperson grabbed a cloth from somewhere and obviously tried to wipe off the stains and in the process introduced swirl marks from the grit deposited in the rain (or he had used a too dry a cloth).

I complained that a new car shouldn't have swirl marks like a used car, after a long winded complaints process they agreed to 'reglaze' the car .. not quite sure what exactly the process is, but it worked and took out the swirl marks.
