According to Mercedes EPC the black box is part of air intake pipe. Attached are diagrams of C63 and CLK63 air intakes.

This makes me wonder why the CLK Black Series has it and mine doesn't.

Does the CLK black have a more powerful engine?
Is it an age related thing, I wager the 1st 63's were the CLK and 211 63. It might be a minor update to the design of the engine and/or engine cover.

Yes, I agree with this.
The Black Series has the same engine as mine.
But I think the Black Series has a slightly different map than the CLK63.
I agree that the box could well be a slight modification.

Yours must be a special lighter version whereby AMG left a few random items out to make it 1/1000ths second quicker.

I also help the weight by removing stuff from the car... like the tyre inflator, tools I don't need, windscreen washer fluid (that I never use) etc.

Rashman yours is deffo missing the black box, a friend of my dads has a 08 clk63 which has the little black box and I just saw this exactly the same as yours and that has it too,

My guess- assuming its not an active component with power going to it is that its some form of inlet "damper" ----perhaps a diaphragm which damps out inlet air pulses?
Its just part of the air intake tube, there is nothing in that box, its just plastic!
Dont know why its a different design, maybe due to space issues.
On the W212 its part number A156 090 0329
and on early CLK's its A156 090 00 29, later on the design changed to the same as the W212.
