Bloody snow

My Disco eagerly waiting for playtime to begin. Currently sitting on BF Goodrich all terrains, if things come down heavy got a set of RR classic wheels with Maxxis Mudzillas ready to go :bannana::bannana:. No sign of snow yet :(
Work colleague has a brand new Disco with winter tyres. Bragging all this week about how she will rescue us all. Then, this morning coming down an incline and put brakes on and slid over junction into roadside verge ! Only thing badly damaged is her confidence.

No snow in Manchester, but if it does the car wont be moved! Working from home that day ;-p

I'm Norwich area too but handily work from home BUT I put a deposit down on a CLS55 at the weekend and haven't seen it yet let alone drive it and it doesn't look like it'll be happening anytime soon either :(
Was it the black one that Robinsons had in for a few days? that I went to look at on Sunday.

The annual problems of driving round in powerful RWD cars with fat tyres, not a good combo

Whilst I am waiting for mine to arrive, I am in my lads Peugeot 207 with pram wheels so no probs for me it seems...

Lots of people think that 4x4 = cloak of invulnerability. Its still a big heavy sledge if your on the wrong tyres and dont know how to drive it in poor conditions. She should get on a couple of off road experiences (like track days for Landys) to see where the limits are. Good thing with an old Land Rover like mine (17 and getting better with every birthday) is that the odd dent and scratch just add character :D.

Happens all the time around my village - local plod calls a farmer who pulls them out with a tractor...

Got appointments in Lomdon today, just as I was leaving Norwich the nursery phoned to say it was closed. So had to drop my lad the other side of the city, Norwich is still really bad.
Added an hour to the journey and then the nav said the a14 was closed just as it joins the M11, so went down the Ipswich road and the A12, was -9c for the first 50 miles and freezing fog.
The car never got above 80c and the washer jet froze, with 75% concentrate in it!
Had to pull over and take it all apart, luckily I had a torx 20 in my glove box, the pipe had popped off the washer jet.
So a journey that normally takes me 2 hours took 5 hours. Just hoping it is a little quicker on the way home.

Was chatting to a freind in the pub last night.

He was about to put his winter tyres on his "white van". Well it's grey but hey ho.

He lives in France, Chamionix. He is amazed that everyone doesn't have snow tyres. As ghe says once you have them it is an investment as you out them on saving your other tyres and so on.

Regardless he finds our driving odd. As posted earlier. Big 4 x 4's not driven well or with unsuitable tyres.

Then the type of snow. Slush through to crisp white snow means very different driving.

He said he was asked about why he spun his wheels when starting off at times.

Lets him know what type of snow he is driving on.

We just don't do snow!

Forecast looking grim for tommorrow & the weekend, plenty off snow & sub zero temperatures:(

Like many of you sceptics after driving without the need for winter tyres for many a moon it had never entered my mind to buy them. Of the times that I had been caught up in really bad snow I simply got on with it, slowly crawling to my destination, getting there hours after I had intended.

But a couple of sustained 'heart in the mouth' 'nerve jangling' long journeys in the winters of 2009/10 and 2010/11 (once in my W124 230E and the other in the CL420) and a 'have to get to on time' job I was doing last winter led me to buy a set of winter tyres for my trusty daily driver 190D.

Well, all I can say is that the first time I really used them in heavy snowfall they had my chuckling to myself on the hour long journey home. I lost count of the amount of rwd BMW'S, Mercedes, Mazda MX5's etc I easily passed by that were stuck , not forgetting the snow plough on the A1 I overtook plus the 15 or so cars which were slowly crawling behind it.

These things work!

Excellent!

Ditto....

And I'm actually looking forward to the dump of snow expected over Oxfordshire tonight, if only to see where the limits of my winter tyres are..... Experience this winter to date is rock solid........

Totally agree, pretty much my situation 3 years ago.

Are you home yet? :D

More heavy snow forecast for tomorrow:crazy:

Just walked in!

Didn't leave Cavendish Square till 5.30pm in the end, and had to pop to Cringleford and collect the dog, my Dad had taken him home with him so he wasn't on his own.

Came out up past Lords and along the Finchley road, then through Hatfield and cut across back to the A11. Took around 3 hours which wasn't too bad I guess, considering when I left off.

I haven't got to go again this week which is a bonus, can see us getting loads of snow dumped on us tomorrow.

Who here who's fitted winter tyres has gone for a narrower wheel. I'm just not feeling the transformation that's being suggested. Improvement yes but transformation...no.

I think there are massive differences between different brands, but width will make a difference as well.

I am using Dunlop Winter Sport 4Ds this year and they are amazing, so, so, so much better in the snow than the Michelin's I was using last year, however, they are advertised as a perfomance tyre that also works very well in snow, and that is a big difference.

I've got 225 45 r17 all round , usually have 245 40 on rear for summer tyres. I use the same wheels and get the tyres changed over at my local tyre fitters for £30. Have never tried anything wider than 225 for winters.

What size have you got?

Yep, that's the one. We went Saturday but couldn't find it on the lot and thought we'd missed it. Salesman couldn't find it either but turns out it was still at the prep centre so we put a deposit down to make sure we had first dibs.

Ironically, we'd been looking for a much younger diesel but all the talk on here about the 55 and that it was low mileage from a main dealer suddenly made the thought of having one more attractive. Fingers crossed it's not a dog when we finally see it.

Were you seriously interested or just going to have a look? Do you know the car at all?

Euston was chaos this evening. Lots of very very delayed trains.

225 all round on 7.5j wheels all round. Michelin Alpin. Brilliant. Transformational.

I find they roll better when they're all round. :D

255 40 at bank and 225 45 both 17s at front. It's Falken winter tyres. Middle of road. I notice most here are running premium brands?
