I've tried to open the bootlid with the release on the key (it's a facelift W202). It was working with the release inside the car but now that has stopped too. I can hear what I'm assuming is the vacuum pump going but it's not opening the catch.

What should I check first? Fuses or take the boot catch off the car and look at that?

Check the setting of the boot lock with your manual. I had this problem a few months ago but resolved it. I'd somehow managed to disable the lock/unlock on the boot. Re-setting will involve inserting the manual part of the key and turning the lock one way or the other.
