Brand New CyberTruck - Rusting!

Mercedes owners commenting on corrosion issues? 😧 Despite driving cars from a manufacturer notorious for paint problems and subframes that don't last? It's like driving a contradiction on wheels. 🛞

Exactly. Which is why organisations like BMW, Honda and Toyota hypothesise, trial and test.

While others are … occasionally … tempted to put all their chips on Number 7

Either that, or...:

Have we ever seen brand new £150k+ Mercedes rust within a week of ownership?

Tesla (vehicles) probably won't exist as a viable company in the next 5 years.
I remember saying that when other manufacturers started making EV's they would be wiped out:banana:
Mmm? don't ask me for any share tips:mad::doh::fail:

And if we did, would it be mentioned on the Tesla owners' forum...? Probably not.

There's something about Tesla (and Mr Musk) that makes some people gloat whenever there's bad news mentioned in relation to them.

In this case, it's a vehicle that they will never buy, from a brand that they can't stand, not to mention that it won't be sold here in the UK anyway, and even if it did, they could not afford it - and yet somehow the fact that Tesla Cybertruck owners are annoyed by rust is important news for some on this Mercedes-Benz forum.....

For the record, I have test driven a Model-X, and I have had long journeys as a passenger in both a Model-X and a Model-Y. I didn't personally warm up to the cars and have no intention of buying one. But I admire what Elon Musk achieved (a massive kick up the back side of several 100+ years old automotive giants) and I wish him and Tesla all the success in the world - they deserve it.

The predictable issue of rust on this stainless steel bodywork doesn't come as news.
It does to me. I thought that was the whole point of stainless steel. Is there something known about the grade of stainless that Tesla are using that meant that rust is expected?

Yep.
It's cr@p :p
I've got several watches made from 316L Stainless. It doesn't 'rust'.

Go on I'll ask, why? 🤔
He is tried to save the company by first discounting new Teslas to the point where no one wanted to 'invest' in them as resale values became non existent (Hertz) , his new wheeze is getting in to bed with China to produce countless driverless taxis that no one wants at a time when the government of the country he does most of his car business from (USA) is actively looking at ways to 'de couple' from China.

He might be a 'genius' but not to sure if he has a viable plan for Tesla cars.

Totally agree. 🙂👍

Brilliantly put & 100% with you there.

Car manufacturers aren’t as daft as Tesla assumed. They’ve swerved rust resistant Stainless steel partly because it’s “only” rust resistant, and partly because it’s a pain to bend, shape, and fettle, as well as being harder on the humans inside when the car takes a shunt.

Has anyone got a photo of the supposed ‘rust’? If it’s the ‘orange specs’ reported before this was already addressed as being surface contamination rather than the actual stainless steel panels rusting.

Not really interested enough to watch a 20 min video on a car that I’ll never be able to buy in this country, to find out if it was the same issue.

No - but that wasn’t the point.

Also who is paying £150k+ for a cybertruck? Even the tri-motor version is almost half that.

Put the beer glasses down, it's journalists winding the public up. Any "rust" is likely to be light, insignificant, "surface contamination," if you will, and unimportant in the grand plan of things.

Worry about the regulations that will stop the thing being sold outside the States (because it's unsafe), or the huge cost of fixing a shunt, or what's going to happen to passengers when some idjit drives on into a concrete pillar or off the steep side of a Californian Canyon.

If we're going to "save the planet" or at least moderate the weather, the real work to be done is to get electric vehicles connected to the Grid so that electricity can be stored in them off-peak, with none wasted, and power stations facing a more even demand right throughout the day / week / year.

Rich people faffing about in luxury motors is a by the way. The challenge is getting the normal man and woman out of their Ford / Vauxhall / Renault, and into an EV

(And reducing air travel, from Agriculture, from industry, making every light an LED, and electrifying heating....)

It’s quite common on cars from several manufacturers, especially when transported by rail. If that’s what it is then it’s easily sorted.

The cybertrucks windscreen wiper is oddly low tech for a vehicle desperately trying to be a prop from Battlestar Galactica. A non articulating fixed single wiper blade around a meter long. The triangle of doom on the passenger side of the screen must be massive. Clown engineering at its finest.

Suppose Tesla owners could always retrofit the articulated mono wiper from a w201 or w124 from 35 years ago if they need their windscreen cleared properly. :D

I am certain that Elon Musk would have removed the windscreen wiper altogether if he could legally get away with it... as well as the unsightly wing mirrors.

EDIT: The Cybertruck that was unveiled two years ago had no windscreen wiper abd no wing mirrors.
