Dear all.

Well, I actually 'looked' at the car properly today. Checked all fuses and tried to diagnose the electric mirror fault. To cut a long story short, the fuse was blown, and when I replaced it, that did not last either...so my guess is there is a short somewhere in the system.

My first guess was the actual wing mirror(s). When I went to look, the folded with the slightest force, so I am assuming they are just broken and need replacing.

Secondly, I inspected the headlights and the bulbs are H1, and it seems the main beam is H1 also. Strange.

If not, what can I do as I am totally new to Mercedes Benz.

Thanks,
Jason.

Hi,
I would remove/disconnect both mirrors from the car, replace the fuse, then introduce one mirror at a time and see which one blows the fuse.
But if they are as you described i would agree with your conclusion and they need replacing, source second hand items, as they are ridicously expensive from MB.
If you need a new pair of folding mirror frames, i may have a set, let me know.

Hi Andy, as much as I don't want to spend money, I would rather get a pair of working ones, then take the time to investigate / fix these ones. If I get them to work, I can then offer them to someone else....hope this makes sense. It's a daily driver, and it's cold, so I would rather replace in one fell swoop than have a faff.

How much do you want for yours?

BTW is it just the frames, or the whole unit. I looked at the How To guide, but that's for retro fitting.

Cheers,
Jason.

Hi,
I have got the complete units inc. glass (if i can find them), the covers won,t be the same colour as your car, but these can be swapped for your covers.
I would rather meet you halfway, as i won,t be able to get them in the post anytime soon.
I,ll drop you a PM.

i think the older W202's didnt have H7 bulbs in them.

what age is it?

Andy, just read this after reading your PM. I will have them off you asap. I forgot I could change the cover. I'm such a dufus.

Fuzzer, mine are H1. I need a pair of main beam bulbs as they don't work. Thought I would check price at Halfrauds....£17!!!! ebay it is, with LED sidelights for £7.99 delivered.

The dealer prices for bulbs arent that bad , but maybe try some of those super dooper bulbs you read about in auto express and the like. Prob give you more light.

The LED sidelight lamps will put up the bulb failure warning light due to the LED drawing a lot less current.

Thanks Andy. Normal ones it is.

Just discovered 2 problems.

1. My main beams to work, but only if I push the stalk outwards (ie to stay on). If I pull it to (eg to let someone out of a junction etc), it does not work so I reckon faulty stalk.

2. Both my dipped and main beams are H1. Very dim and no good to mankind. I checked the voltages today and they were 12 volts. Any solutions?

It is now possible to get non error LEDs now, I have some fitted. I doubt the ones mentioned are though.

As I said before mate, get yourself the facelift headlights before messing about with new bulbs:thumb:

+1 having had both the facelifts are 10x better

Hi,
Not sure whether I agree with the statement that the facelift 202's headlights are any better, I have had both on my cars at the same time and I never noticed any substantial difference, at least not to warrant the cost of the new headlights and the lower trim panels have to be repaced as well IIRC, and these of course have to be resprayed.
I have a set of facelift headlights that came off of my C43 when I fitted Xenon units, and I have never thought it worthwhile to fit them on my C230K
I,ll PM you tonight when I get in from work, regarding the mirrors.
What year is your car by the way?
The headlights you have fitted, do they one big cover behind the lamps or two round ones?

Hi Andy.
Not wishing to doubt your experience, but my 1st MB was a C180 of 1994 vintage. On joining this forum and over on the otherside I read many posts concerning the upgrade of bulbs to Nighthawks, Silverstars etc etc because my light throw was so poor. The overriding consensus from members that had been in a similar position was to change the complete headlamp to the facelift version and then fit the improved bulbs. This I did with secondhand units from ebay and as you say the lower trims were fitted at the same time. I was very pleased that I had taken the advice that was offered as the improvement was certainly worth the small cost. (less than a £100). Now I have OEM hid's on one of the kompressors I have and the improvement is about the same again over the facelift lights. But then again it was quite an expensive option when new.

Ditto, my first W202 was a 1995 C180 with terrible headlights, since getting a facelift 1999 model the difference is the other end of the scale.

Why would you need lower trim panels if your not fitting wipers?

It was a while ago now, but if I remember correctly the lower trims are slightly different in so far as there are cut outs on the part that sits under the light itself on one of the versions. Not sure which one but they were a different part no.

Like I said I have had both, and were using the cars daily, to be honest I actually thought at one time that the early 202 lights were better, but they did have some cheap upgraded halogens lamps which I thought was the reason.
The lights lenses are in good nic too on the facelift items, I might try swapping them over at the weekend and giving them another go.
I did,nt think the lower panels were any different either I just recall a conversation I had with Nic (Euromerc) when he said they were different.

hello all.
busy day today so just reading this.

The cover at the back of the headlight is a big one...and has Bosch written on it.

I will just suck it up and get better lamps.

J
