Buying winter tyres... Be quick!!

A Question - is it dangerous to use winter tyres as your only set? Or is it IMPERATIVE to change back to summer ones in summer..??

I think i read somewhere (possibly this thread) that occasionally there were some issues with MyTyres and credit cards, and the problem seems to get blamed on the other dept by the dept's involved, so you tend to go round in circles, better to do as you did i think and use another payment method and sort out the CC issue later, especially if the tyres just went up in price !
They've accepted my bank transfer now, just waiting for a delivery date.

As discussed on another thread not only is it acceptable to use winter tyres all year round it is recommended by Michelin (I think) that if don't want to buy different tyres for summer you run winters all year round - the only downside being dry braking performance.

I suspect it may be down to individual manufacturers.

This from 'the other thread' and Nokian tyres
We do not recommend
winter tyres (M+S) to be used under summer conditions.

I'm guessing the compound they use makes a big difference as to whether thay can be safely used in summer.

This doesn't surprise me at all. I bet the Nokians are amazing on snow and ice though!

Three weeks ago I had 4 Vredestein Wintrac 4 extreme 255/50 R19 tyres fitted locally to my Range Rover Sport for £799.

Mytyres today sell the same tyres for £259.70 each, making it £1038.80 plus £65 extra for delivery = £1103.80 total. So buying before the increase saved £304.80.

 holy crap ...... i guess they've been watching the weather and forecasts, and saw the chance to make a killing

I suspect that these storage bags might be a bit of a bonus for the fitters.

If your tyres were supposed to come with the storage bags I'd give them a call and ensure you get them so you can store your tyres neatly.

I've had my winter tyres fitted now. :)

I was a bit surprised when the storage 'bag' was simply one large plastic bag.

Can anyone please confirm what their Kwik Fit bags look like.

Thanks.

My KwikFit bags were invisible for my Contis as I didn't get any.

I was given 4 x large plastic bags with continental written on the bag.

Not quite what I was expecting either.

Were they just plain open sacks, or were they tyre shaped with a zip to seal?

But the cost of buying winter tyres and having them fitted and removed is high in comparison to snow socks. We believe snow tyres are difficult to justify unless you live in a very remote area.

That doesn't have to be the case. Second-hand alloys or steel wheels can be picked up cheaply. I bought my 4 alloys for £50. A pair of snow socks are also £50.

I'm not openly dismissing snow socks, but cost doesn't have to be the reason to not buy winter tyres.

Good point about low cost wheels. I wonder what size I can get away with to fit over the brakes on my E55 AMG... certainly not 15" :)

Not being confrentational here, but what were you expecting? What had they advertised? Do you need anything other than "a plastic bag"?

I think what they were expecting was some sort of bag that is reusable, and most people would consider a plastic/poly bag unlikely to be reusable after the tyres had been transported in them

True I wasn't expecting a hand crafted felt lined bag ;)

I was more concerned that the plastic bag is not breathable and whether this might induce mould.

4 smaller sags rather than 1 very large one would also have been a bit more convenient. :)

Not a major grumble, but just curious to know what other member received.
