Hi All,

Im new to the forum and this is my first post.

In August I bought a new C180 C Class coupe and absolutely loved it but sadly after driving it for 3 weeks I had a bad accident and had to sell as I have lost use of my left foot.

Im now looking for another C class coupe (obviously an auto this time!) and cant decide whether to get another C180 Petrol or C220 diesel. The petrol one I had recently did about 450 miles to a tank and im wondering what the c220 diesel will do to a tank with real world driving (I dont pay any attention to official figures).

Can anyone offer there experience of mileage in the c180 petrol / c220 diesel respectively. Obviously the diesel is more expensive and im wondering whether it's worth paying the extra if the miles per tank is only marginally better? I have around £23,000 to spend and can get a 62 or 13 plate diesel automatic or a 13 plate petrol.

Any help/advice from fellow coupe owners would be welcome!

Thanks all.

Personally I think a torqey diesel lends itself better to an auto box. Obv if you have abig petrol that would work. But out of the 2 you are talking about I would go diesel.

Diesel is the fuel of Satan, stay petrol a much nicer experience than a belching 4 pot oil burner :thumb:

I have a c 220 saloon and probably average around 550 miles to a tank. I know a lot of people on here can do better than that with sane engine but I don't drive mine to conserve fuel. I would say though that you need to get a test drive in the diesel because its not the most refined and coming from a petrol will probably be a shock. I have had diesels for years so I don't find it an issue but I have read a few comments on here from people that really don't like it.
It is in my opinion a great engine though apart from the noise, pulls really well and suits the autobox.

Big petrol engine with a alush box works. Little petrol engine and slush box, not quite so great :crazy::dk::eek:

Me I like a big 6.2L V8 with my auto slush box.:bannana::bannana::bannana:

My little petrol engine works very well with the auto box, although its not the C180. Ok i have the handling pack option which means quicker changes but I doubt that this makes a significant difference

The 180 might be a little under powered to give the "Mercedes" experience with an auto box, the diesel has much higher torque and would feel more relaxed with the auto box, but as others have said numerous times the small Diesel engine is not exactly the most refined and you may hate it.
You really HAVE to go and test drive both models to decide for yourself.

If you not at all a brisk driver then the petrol with auto might be to your liking but do not expect the fuel consumption to be anything other than average, apples and oranges I am afraid.
