C124 refurbish

well done... another thread to watch!!

If there is any interest I'll open up a new thread on my period widebody conversion of a 1988 300CE twin turbo.
The attempt will be made to do a repro of "AMG1" the 320CE done by Stratton's...but of course with the steering wheel on the opposite side !!!

Will it be ready for Stirling? Judging by the condition of the engine bay, and how meticulous you are about that, I'm surprised you allowed the rest of the car to fall into that state in the first place....Rocco did mention you had brought it in. You won't be disappointed with the results when it comes out.

Derek does have very high standards, the car was always spotless and its good to see it will still see the TLC it thoroughly deserves.

:D I know you're kidding...:D:D:D ...aren't you?

I'm quite sure I won't be disappointed - if I am, you, Rocco and the rest of the Forum will surely be told.

Tying in with the other current thread in which there is a lot of excellent advice and comment, I believe the C124 must have the most enthusiastic following of owner-drivers than any other model on this forum. And with very good reason: Classy looks combine with essentially simple mechanics. Running costs are not extortionate yet performance and day to day practicality remain better than most "ordinary" cars. For me, the feelgood factor of driving a £45k car remains intact.

They will be collectible classics and I'm putting my wallet where my mouth is!

The only time I'm being serious Derek, is when I'm parting with money;). For anyone who hasn't seen the engine compartment on Derek's car, imagine it as it left the factory....only cleaner:)

hehe that makes two cars racing to be finished before the next GTG.

i broke my 107 headlamp lense last night fitting it back on  - there goes another few pounds :(

i hope the sprayers mask your immaculate engine bay up before spraying!! wouldnt want any overspray on that immaculate engine bay

i wanna see this engine bay, i spent all day yesterday on detailing world and they make the engine bays look superb, what did you use to clean yours??

take a look on the scottish meet thread - there are some pics of the car there.

derek - if you need a hand putting stuff backtogether feel free to ask....

Well, here's the final "before" picture. I could have removed the bumpers (I've had them off before), but the problem was fitting them inside the car:

The trim round the windows is coming off, but I've never tackled that so wasn't prepared to risk it :o

The rear jacking point looks a bit healthier...

...as does the inside of the front wheelarch...

The windscreen is being replaced because of this:

Windscreenfracture.jpg

I have been told this is a stress fracture caused by slight corrosion on the weld underneath. No-one believes there is cause for concern that corrosion will be serious and, being ever the optimist, I choose to believe them!

I am sure my clean engine bay will survive the onslaught - here it is looking rather grubbier than usual ;)

I'm going to ask Rocco if there is any chance I can get to take photos during process.

Thanks for looking in.

Sorry, no secret recipe. It was never that dirty so just Gunk and pressure spray for the very lowest parts and suitable Autoglym stuff and Autosol for the upper parts. I always start with long fingernails.

looking at the pics, what is actually wrong with the current paint apart from blisters on the wings?

Looks pretty shiny from here..
