C220/C270 v BMW 530D

Hi All again :-)

Still looking for my C270 cdi but at least I made a decision :-)

I have seen a few 2001 Avant Garde "Tip" models pretty cheap at around £k 4/4.5

Are the "Tip" versions prone to any bigger issues or loss of fuel consumption or should I stick to finding a normal Avant Garde.

I also see on Parkers there is an Avant Garde SE? is this also different to the normal Avant Garde

Many Kind thanks

Alex

The SE versions may have a few extra little options but basically the same as an Avantgarde. Most of the gearboxes have the 'tip' feature and make little if any difference to fuel economy.

I wholly recommend the 270 as it was my last MB I had!!

Avantgarde SE is the same as avantgarde IIRC, maybe a few more goodies but thought it was the 3 trims on these cars

Classic=basic
Elegance=comfy
Avantgarge=sporty

All automatic ones have a tiptronic function.

Hi

Thanks :-) Fab info :-)

I hope to get a mechanic to look at a few in the next couple of weeks.
As I can only afford £k 4/4.5 it wont reach to a post 2004 upgraded interior version but should I steer clear of the very first ones eg 2001 or were their very few issues with the first models as they were based on the previous?

As I have always bought and owned BMW's, Im impressed how many full service history cars around 90k miles - 140k miles there are for an up to ten year old cars!

Stick to 2004 onwards. The early 203's are cr@p

Our old shape 530d is remapped and clears about 48 mpg on stop start motoring. Our new E60 does mid 50's and clears 60 mpg on a run amazing but true.

As Olly^ says don't touch anything before 2004 or what you save in fuel you'll spend in repairs.

From what you are describing you want the car for I'd stick with the 530d idea.

Thats the reason I run the Volvo diesel as my daily driver.

I will struggle to get an 04 or later C270 CDI for 4.5£k are the 2000-2004 c270's that bad :-(

are the 2000-2004 c270's that bad :-(

No, Not if you find a good one and please try and remember, there are good and bad in all models, pre and post 2004,

good luck with your search,

Terry.

Larger budget and CLK

Hi all

Started this thread a while ago and have just read back on all your comments.

I now have a larger budget of around 6/7K and will certainly buy a CLK.

Still I would like the model from 2002 with the linked front headlights.
Also my driving habits mean I do either school run type journeys or 20-40 mile return trips three or four days a week.

Im still looking for something that will give me the best mpg and for some reason still keen on buying my first diesel. If I do go for a diesel are service costs higher or lower than a petrol and from what i have read the 320cdi or 220cdi from around 2005 might be good CLK's to buy?

Kind regards

Which clk now?

Realising after seeing a few 320cdi clk's Im going to have a wait a good while to get one at the price I want, even though my budget can stretch up to £8k now. I wanted the 320diesel as the V6 has great performance along with the very reasonable economy. And miles wise Id be happy with one up to around 110,000 on the clock.

I think I will be disappointed with the 220cdi and maybe the 270cdi is my only option as I could get a reasonable one for my budget on a 2006 model?

Wondering if I went the petrol route on a clk which would give me the best mpg on shortish runs. Im assuming I could pick up a 2006 model for my maximum budget of £8k?

Many thanks again for advice and comments

So far your purchase journey is identical to mine, the same cars considered, similar budgets, the reasoning all makes sense to me.

but finally we bought a BMW Z4

No regrets.

So you are looking for 2 cars? You also have posts on here saying that you are looking for a CLK 320CDi to replace a BMW 523
