Hi guys,

Experiencing a few issues with my car. Not too familiar with the car yet as only purchased it last week. Poking around a found a fluid level check next to the fuel filter.

It has min and max at both 20 and 80 degrees. It looks bone dry. What is it? And should I be worried?

Thanks!

If you mean the black bottle type thing in front of the fuel filter. That is the power steering reservoir.

if its the large black cap then its for the power steering fluid.
John
you beat me by 3 mins Andy

Thanks andy and John, should I be worried by the level or should I really check it after warming the car up, perhaps a 20 minute spin round the block? I haven't felt any issues with the steering!

It should really be topped up.

Does it move up the dipstick at all once it has warmed up or is this the first time you have checked it

It's the first time I've checked it. I'll start her up tomorrow and then re check the level. If its still low I think it's worthwhile topping up.

On another note, I see you specialise in car diagnosis... Any chance you can look at my first post about my turbo? Some advise would be appreciated so I don't get ripped of by the dealer.. Thanks in advance.

If anyone is unsure about the merc they are buying it is always worthwhile giving someone like Andy a bit of a crust for checking it over before parting with your cash. £50 quid or so for a once over is a lot less than a grand or so for a new turbo and then another couple of grand or so to sort out an auto problem and aanother couple of grand for an aircon problem........ the list can go on and on with mercs.

A grand for a new turbo...! Sh*t, I hope to god it isn't a new turbo required!

Seeing that you have not had the car that long you shouldnt have to put your hand in your pocket at all.

I know what your saying but you do have the law on your side

I hope not.. I just don't have a lot of faith in second hand car dealers!

The problem is they usually make them look good (clean the profit into the car) then any thing not MOT worthy is usually down to the customer returning with faults to be corrected, they expect this as if they repaired all the cars they had for sale on thier car fronts they would have to pay out thousands before even getting anyone interested in a sale.

They move the stock around to other car fronts to make it look like the cars are being sold so look around to see if theres the same car even with different plates on it ( personalized to be removed after the sale), a reputable dealer will uphold his part of the "deal" and correct any serious defects, but you should always get an independent inspection and road test done before buying any car, any faults found will either give grounds for some price reduction or get the dealer to fix the problems before they hand the keys and paper work over.

On the most part its your responsibility to do some work to ensure your getting a good deal and not expect the dealer to bend an bow to everything you want.

Legally you have your statutory rights of course and they know this.

:)
