C250 Td funny noise

back on ebay again shill bidding last time!!, put in a bid so i can take bumpers and probably the interior for my car unless a kind sole can offer 7 seater grey leather to install on mine;-)

Just a quick question to any of you, have you heard of problems with faulty fuel senders on the c250? I was messing with the car last weekend and it ran out of fuel, yet the gauge was showing quarter tank. Is this a common fault?

1/4 fuel shortage is usually down to a blocked fuel strainer on W124's.... maybe the same on the W202 aswell? or could be something to do with the saddle tanks.

worth checking the strainer and cleaning it or replacing it if you can to eliminate that possible cause.

That sounds very likely. I dont know much about the tank on the c250, i'm told its saddle shaped with two senders and a syphon system to level the two halfs. Is there a strainer in each half do you know?
As the tank is filled on one side and the pump draws from the other, is there a possibility the syphon pipe is blocked - leaving the fuel on one side of the tank?

I have Just ordered 2 litres of the Liqui Moly Diesel purge, so once it has arrived and i have run the cars on it , i will report on its effectiveness!!

I got a litre for my C250 td, ( which is the one making all the noise in the video) on 166k
& a litre for the 124 300d, which is starting to knock a bit! on 160k

With regards to the fuel tank strainer, i have asked the Mercedes parts guys many times about these, and every time they say they are not on the 202'S!

This was when i was trying to trace where the bubbles in the fuel lines are coming from!

I have tried to look for it, but if i am correct i think its location is either just in front of or above the diff (on pictures I've seen)

I cant find it on my car though!

The balance pipe seems to be the most common suggestion for this problem, from what i have read on here!!

Hi fella's,

I also have a C250 TD, and experienced a very similar problem/sound when I first got mine around a month ago.

I took it to my mate who has excellent knowledge of diesels, and as dieselman says he said injectors. So along with a hand from him, we took out all 5 injectors and he gave them a new lease of life. Put them back in, the problem/sound after 30-40 seconds of driving had totally disappeared. Excellent result, so I would opt for doing that guys.

Luckily it cost me nothing however (few beers) and all was well. However last week I upgraded my injectors for larger ones (not sure exact spec) but the car has so much more pull, a little more smoke but with a piggyback/map it should sort it out...(not that i'm that fussed, dont mind black clouds :P) I can get specs on injectors if you lads are interested...

As well last night, I took the cats out...to say the least, a BIG difference!! ;)

Cheers,

Mark.

I would be interested in what injectors you used please?

Was it simply just change them over?

Are the pipe threads the same and every thing?

Thanks
regards

Jon

The injector bodies are the same, all that is changed/refurbished is the size of the nozzle and pintle.

Lookks like i have got to get my injectors re-conditioned, so i may aswell upgrade them if it snot too expensive. I would like the spec on those injectors aswell please mark.

I have used the Diesel Purge and it quietened it down alot, its still there faintly but no where near as bad, was very smooth when running on the purge but when put back on diesel, noise started again but not as bad.

Any news on the bigger injectors? As I think i'll still get mine reconditioned in due course.

Any specs on the injectors yet?

I have been running on a dodgy mix of Diesel, kerosene and ATF for the past week and i've got to say there is a noticable difference. The knocking on tick-over as gone and it is generally quieter. I filled up with diesel yesterday and it seemed the same, so its a definate improvement.
The pinking from the engine on acceleration is still there (regardless of which fuel i use). I'm beginning to think it may be something other than fuel - turbo waste gate perhaps.

you can test that by pulling the vac hose off the actuator, then moving the arm manually.

If you have really long arms, you will be able to reach the throttle cable too, other wise you might need someone just to try it on different revs.

Start when the car is cold though, as it gets very hot round that area!!

I'm not sure whats going on with mine, the clattering has come back! :(

What I dont get, is it had gone away when running on the purge, but after being back on diesel for a bit, it all come back!

Has anyone actually seen a tank strainer on a 202 c250?

Do you actually have to drop the diff to get to it?

All seems a bit much as all i want to make sure i have one first as the MB Parts man is adament that they were not on 202, and i have looked on EPC and it does not 'not specific for this vehicle'

Sorry for the late reply lads, have been away to Thailand! :D

I will check with my mate at some point this week & let you guys know what we are using in my car... defiantly worth doing rather than just re-coned ones.

On the way back from Heathrow, with a boot full of luggage we managed to maintain a steady 135-140 in the early hours. Something which would have not been possible if it wasn't for the injectors and de-cat. It used to top at 120, and push eventually to 125. Noticeable difference. But we did use nearly a full tank £78, to get back up North to Teesside lol!! :P

Any updated info on these injectors?

Dieselman, might be able to help on this:

Would i be right in thinking the injector nozzles from a 2.2 or whatever they are ( what i could find from a quick scan on ebay) 4 cylinder engine, give more fuelling if installed into a 250?

As they must be a bit bigger, as its a 4 cyl 2.2 wheras the 250 is 2.5 5cyl.

Obviously installing 5 nozzles from the 4 cyl model!

Would doing something like this cause any problems, like timing?

I know the injectors are not electronically controlled, but could putting different size ones interfere with anything?

Would you reccomend getting the nozzle kits on ebay are they any good?

Is it a straight swap? Or is something like this best left for the specialists?

I'm getting quoted about £300 quid, for getting my injectors reconditioned! :(

Help and advice much appreciated as always!!

that price seems about right, i'm looking in to having mine done. I am told there is a difference between getting them reconditioned and getting the re-calibrated. Apparently mine may only need re-calibrating, not sure if the price is any different.

My engine had the same noise around 1200rpm, so I got the injectors reconditioned and fitted them today.

He said they where worn and two injectors were dribbling, but the noise is still there.

It runs smoother and doesn’t smoke on kick down any more.

Not sure what to check next? I don’t think its air in the pipes anymore because it starts fine in the mornings.
