Hi,

I know the older in-direct diesel engines are quite busy in their noise production compared to direct diesels and petrol. But I can pick up what I guess to be a certain diesel clatter (maybe on one cylinder) that I feel is wrong or shouldn't be there? Is that possible, maybe it's not firing properly on that cylinder properly. It only happens at idle. It drives fine and pulls like a train.

Anyone any experience on this easy to pick up diesel-ish kind of clatter from the engine?

Or could it be down to the fact that it's a 5 cyl?
(it has a peculiar exhaust note doesn't it, even for a diesel).

Thanks,
D

Will get some tomorrow from motor factors. Any suggestions? Thanks for the advice.

going through the history, it's had forte flush and conditioner at every oil change, this mechanic had ocd, he seems really good, the receipts are well detailed, i'll shove some in tomorrow and give it a good run to manchester airport.

Piston slap.

well i put a bottle of forte with £75 worth of diesel yesterday, it's still there, i just don't want to know that it's a mechanical fault and hope it's just crappy combustion.

so is this incomplete or untimed combustion the same as piston slap, or is piston slap more serious, i thought these engines were bullet proof?

More like full of bullet holes unfortunately, the top halves are ok but the bottom half isn't.

Grab a recording of the sound and put it on her so I can hear it if its different from the video link above.

There's a belt tensioner on the front serpentine belt. The top mount of the damper tends to break up & rattle. That may be one source of noise

Another source is nailing and a third is noisy lifters. You'll have to pin down what is making the noise

The 6-cylinder 606 engines are hard on the engine mounts. You may find that the mounts have collapsed and are transmitting noise into the cabin

Why make comment about a 110CDi when the O/p's engine is an OM605?

605 generally are strong engines.

A quick test of it being combustion related is to rev the engine up and let it fall back to idle. If the noise stops on over-run, it's combustion.
Another test is to crack each injector union off, in turn. The one that stops the noise is the duff one.
Yet another method is to use an engine stethoscope to detect mechanical noise.

You don't rev it high enough to allow it to over-run, so can't really tell, but it sounds like a dribbling injector.

How high should I rev it? Do I hold it high for a few seconds? I do seem to have moist connections on the pump where the lines come out of.

The seals at the top of the pump are easy enough to change, there's a 'how to' somewhere, you just need the right socket.

From the video the sound is very similar to what I had in mine. Have a search through some old threads, try 'C250TD funny noise'. The sound in mine was worst if you kept the revs at 1200rpm.

Turned out to be a blocked oil well in the timing sprocket. It didn't seem to make any real difference to the running after or before fixing, however it may be just the injector in yours.

Well I hope it is. I bought the car on the merit that the engine is quite solid, I hope it lives up to it's reputation.

There are some other threads with the same problem, I think 'JonathanC250' posted a similar video, not sure if he fixed his or not?

I did over 15,000 trouble free miles with the noise. It did get louder over time but never made any difference to the running that I could tell.

When I had the injectors recon'd it made the noise worse.

interesting read, that 'funny noise' thread... did u have to buy that timing sprocket new? or did you just find it and found a block of gunk somewhere, like how much of a job was it?

thanks so far you guys, i'm sorry to be bringing this issue up again and i should have searched more at first (bad me).
