Does anyone actually know why there is a power difference between the W202 C36 and W124 E36?
I guessing they are the same engine and gearbox (although in the last year or two of production the C36 gained a 5 speed 'box, IIRC), and the exhausts would be pretty much the same?

So why is there this power difference?
268bhp for a the E36, while the smaller C36 got 280bhp, again, IIRC

If anything, wouldn't you want more power in the bigger, heavier E-Class?
Or did Mercedes purposely restrict the W124's power for fear of running into 500E performance territory?

Your thoughts, please. Or may be one of us actually the knows precisely why! :)

I'm not sure, but isn't the C36 280PS - a little bit less than 280bhp, about 276?

Where abouts are these figures from? What about the torque figures :)

Otherwise, maybe it's down the exhaust or something as you suggest?

I'm not sure about torque figures.
I got those BHP figures from my brain ;) - just what I remember from Mercedes Enthusiast articles, and other reading other things. Feel free to correct me, as the memory isn't what it used to be! hehe :o

From AMG's site. My guess-- minor changes to engine management and or exhaust (emissions) also found in the early E class w210 MODEL also.
