C36 Amg engine into R107 SL project

A quick post to update this thread. Progress has been slow because of my summer holidays (motoring round the Alps since you ask!). Taking the engine out of the SL is taking a long time, guess I am being a lot more careful than I was with the C36 as the SL is not destined for the scrapper.

Progress this weekend has been removal of the bonnet to give a bit more working space

and I now have everything disconnected bar one engine mount which I will remove this evening. This weekend I am away so frustratingly I can't install the new engine for a few weeks now.

Watch this space!

So progress has been slow but the latest update is the engine is out of the SL waiting for the new one to go in. Again using my toolset of an engine hoist and the forwards from the village Rugby team.

Whilst removing the old engine I noticed the sumps are a different shape between the two units so will have to swap them over. Should be easy enough but messy, oh and the sump gaskets look the same but have different part numbers......

Not much will happen for a few weeks now due to other commitments, will update with pics when I get a chance

Ben

looks great,
i love the 107 (some call it the Samuel l jackson)
but i do feel sorry for the c36 that went to the scrappy i would kill for a silver mint c36 but 202s arnt hard to make mint if the bodywork is tatty, but the 36 engine will be a blast in the SL, such a great project

Just discovered this thread this evening. As the proud new owner of a near-mint 300SL it is fascinating to see what you've been up to.

Personally, I've been very pleasantly surprised and impressed with the performance of my SL in terms of speed, torque, handling and fuel economy and that's from someone who drives an Alfa Romeo as an everyday car.

Still, a great thread and an intriguing project - when it's finished, you'll have to arrange a gtg for all of us other R107 owners to come along and see the finished article!

That is a good idea, additionally anyone on here is welcome to come and have a look at the work in progress if they are interested.

I guess it won't be done (bodywork + engine) for at least 18 months now but then again the engine might start first time and it will be really easy ;)

Us older dudes/gits would probably call the R107 a Bobby Ewing or a Jenifer Hart :p
not many young folks who know elmore leonard's jackie brown and that the main character drives a r107 in full US spec with bumpers :)

Also think this project would be of interest to Merc Enthusiast Mag. Take lots of pics documenting the whole build.

that 107 is actually Samuels hes a avid Mercedes collector.

Did you ever get your 16inch wheels. I may have a set in decent nick if I find a set of 15" standards.

Did you dump the old sump? I'm looking for a cheap M103 sump pan in good nick :)

(I'm assuming all M103s share the same sump)

Edit: Ah, thinking through your post again, I guess you reused the M103 pan

Interesting! Do you mean the 15" standard SL wheels ? If so perhaps we can do some kind of trade / deal ? My 15 s are in not bad nick.

Yep will be reusing the M103 pan sorry. I am not sure they will all use the same sump either, it appeared to be designed around the cross member positions on the R107.

Mind you if you are changing the sump on your 2.6 why not upgrade to a 3.0 engine while you are at it, I may know of one for sale soon.....

I already did (or someone did anyway) :D

Drop me an email to jon.lewis AT me.com, but that is exactly what I want to do.

Small update. I have now removed the sump from the M103 engine, not too messy but still had to drill a couple of bolts out. I have cleaned it up prior to POR15 coating and will install on the M104 engine at the weekend (probably)

Further update. Got the M103 sump all cleaned up, painted and ready to go onto the M104 engine. All in position offered up the new sump gasket and noticed they are a different size and have different mounting holes, the set up at the front of the engine is different between the M103 and M104.

Once I had calmed down I re-fitted the M103 sump to the M103 and will get the M104 item modified so it clears the subframe in the SL. Annoying as I was hoping to have the M104 engine fitted by now.......

I am looking to do a swap for my r107 (1973 450SL). The engine has been sitting for 14+ yrs and at least the cams have developed rust pits from moisture. Probably there are problems in the rest of the motor. I was able to start and run it for couple of minutes.

I have located an M104 for my car and wanted to know what was the outcome of your swap (i.e. sump pan, engine mounts, other clearance issues, etc)? I have not purchased the motor yet.

Hi-de-hi and welcome to the forum.

Firstly which M104 engine? There are two variants, a 300 24v and a 320 24v with the latter having serious wiring degradation/ECU problems.

You would be better advised going for the M103 3ltr which was fitted to later 107s as standard and which you therefore know will fit.
But! You will need the complete donor car cos the gearbox will need to come with the engine (the bellhousings are different), then you need the wiring loom and engine electrics not to mention the fuel pump package, voltage control relay, gearshift lever and rod, propshaft, et al.
