C43 Engine starts but doesnt idle after 3 secs

Just wanted to share some technical info with you folks.

Just bought a C43 a couple of weeks ago. The car was running rich (later found this when spark plugs were checked - black soot). The side effect of this is that the car would backfire (back-fire) under hard accleration in first gear.

The last backfire resulted in the car failing to restart. That is, the engine would starts for a couple of seconds but failed to idle. It would cut out. The car had to be towed home.

I have just replaced the mass air flow sensor (MAF) and this has cured the problem. So if you are having similar problems, it might be worth while borrowing a MAF from someone you know (if you are lucky) to check whether thats causing your problem.

Odd to find the MAS causing an engine to run rich, I would expect it to run lean because of it under-reading the volume of air. Doesn't really surprise me though!

Sorry for hi-jacking the thread, but quite worrying to find that the number of C43 posts with engine problems is going up every day...

Called the dealer today, where they have been replacing the tensioner to see if that fixed the "noisy" chain, but alas not.

Next step would be the chain, which would be replaced quoting 6-24 hours of labour!!!!!!!!!!
