<div class="bbWrapper">C63 refused to start this morning, unlocked the car, turned the key, all lights on but nothing from the starter motor, I tried a few times but eventually gave up, then I thought maybe battery in the key so checked the voltage 3V on each cell so no problem there, went out and tried again and it started and has been fine ever since, it's going in for a diagnostic check on Monday to see if anything has been logged but before that happens can anybody shed light as to what the problem could be?</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Not sure. It may be as simple as the fob and the car got out of sync. This used to happen if you pushed with the fob buttons when out of range of the car. It could then take a short time for everything to re-sync again.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">That can't happen on a Mercedes DAS3 system as the RF comfort operations have nothing to do with the IR immobiliser.<br /> <br /> The key doesn't need batteries to work.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">It's the car being stubborn, would you walk out in this weather <img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f61b.png" class="smilie smilie--emoji" loading="lazy" width="64" height="64" alt=":p" title="Stick Out Tongue :p" data-smilie="7"data-shortname=":p" /></div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Set off to take the car to the dealers for them to put it on the diagnostic kit and it refused to start again, after a few choice words, and after turning the key on and off it fired up, they found no faults recorded, pretty much as I expected as it was working fine by then, a faulty ignition lock or key is the prime suspect they think, anybody else had a similar problem with a W204?<br /> <br /> I'm now using the spare key to see if it solves the problem only thing is I daren't go far in it.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">It can't be the key if the steering lock retreats and the key is allowed to turn.<br /> <br /> It could be the EIS or starter relay or starter motor.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">I used to have a similar symptom in a Vito I owned. However that would also sometimes have the added complication of not allowing you to remove the key at all.<br /> <br /> The dealer never solved it and it was actually suggested at one point it was a feature....I burst out laughing and that was quickly brushed under the carpet.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">One more thing I've just remembered is that when the key is turned to the start position and nothing happens to the starter motor the anti skid image appears in the MFD</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">The gearbox isn't showing as being in gear, is it?</div>

<div class="bbWrapper"><blockquote data-attributes="" data-quote="Dieselman" data-source="post: 1601953" class="bbCodeBlock bbCodeBlock--expandable bbCodeBlock--quote js-expandWatch"> <div class="bbCodeBlock-title"> <a href="/goto/post?id=1601953" class="bbCodeBlock-sourceJump" rel="nofollow" data-xf-click="attribution" data-content-selector="#post-1601953">Dieselman said:</a> </div> <div class="bbCodeBlock-content"> <div class="bbCodeBlock-expandContent js-expandContent "> The gearbox isn't showing as being in gear, is it? </div> <div class="bbCodeBlock-expandLink js-expandLink"><a role="button" tabindex="0">Click to expand...</a></div> </div> </blockquote> Good point, I must confess I hadn't noticed, I'll keep my eye open next time it does it.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Had similar on a 203. Sometimes the keys worked. Sometimes did not. Dozy dealer insisted it was the keys and got 2 new ones. Apparently that was what MB advised. Turned out it was the ignition switch (EIS).</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Sounds very similar to ECU failure - the first system in the diagnostic check is ESP. Very often the case that it will start one time and not the next, when it doesn't start it will say &quot;ESP Fault, visit workshop&quot; or similar. Alos it's common for this to be an intermittant problem.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Wouldn't start again yesterday morning so got the roadside assist to come out and guess what, it started first time, he put the star diagnostic on and it came up with a couple of faults, a circuit 15 'R' relay and an engine 87 relay both of which were replaced and it's been OK since, so here's hoping.<br /> <br /> I must say the Mercedes Assist were very good indeed and well worth having the car serviced at the main dealer.</div>
