Does anybody know of a website where I can enter a number plate and it gives me car info, insurance group, manual/auto etc.......

im stumped but I am sure they are out there

The RAC site should give what you need but you will have to pay.

Why do you need such information, if it's to view prospecive purchases why not just check the specs on http://wisebuyers.com.

Surely you know the model in advance.

thats the thing I dont know the model, was looking at a 24 valve 3 litre coupe 124 and I was checking they came as a manual

All UK cars were specced as autos, but exceptionally you could ask for the manual version as a special order.

A long time ago when I was still young and foolish ;), I didn't want an auto either. Now that I have come to my senses, I wouldn't consider a manual any more :D

I love manuals, the 55 is obviously and auto and its a great auto, very slick and pretty much does exactly what you want when you want it apart from downshifting when driving hard, I have more fun in the puma gear change wise, however having had a crank position sensor error in the car you realise that when the engine shuts down in an auto it makes moving the car a very expensive job, with a manual I can get anybody I know to just come and tow me if something goes wrong, im not saying I will never get an auto but while I am trying to pay debts off I am going to go back to a manual as it will be cheaper, merc manuals are not the best, the gearbox is ok but the shifter mechanism lets it down, if the gearbox blows up I know I can take it out, strip it and rebuild it as I did it on the last merc manual I owned, in the long run it will be cheaper for me

Well, on the rare occasions that I drive a manual, I get no fun out of it whatsoever!

in the long run it will be cheaper for me
That can of course be very well the case, but for me convenience supersedes cost - so it's an individual preference, I guess :)

Manual/Auto - theres an arguement that will never end!! if I want to cruise around with low effort driving then the merc is clearly the better choice, if I want a little go karty thrash then the puma fits the bill,

However when I have paid my debts of I will be lookin for a W220 or an XKR which are both autos

although i prefer manuals a clutch wouldnt last at all long on one of them, and besides its a big car you want auto especially for the kick down.

Auto's all the way for me. Had the unfortunate pleasure of driving a manual last week after about 2 years and I hated every minute of it. Makes me realise how much more relaxing an auto is.
